In 2019, the EU will welcome a new leadership, face the final chapter of Brexit and set the rules for its new research and education programmes. At the same time, new technologies, larger and more diverse student populations, constraints on academic freedom and new ways to learn and teach will have a strong impact on the longer-term opportunities and challenges at Europe’s universities.

In this New Year’s Message, EUA Secretary General Lesley Wilson outlines what is at stake in 2019 and what EUA is doing to support its members in such crucial times.
EUA has launched a series of thematic papers on learning and teaching. Two new papers are now online. Registration is still open for the 2019 European Learning & Teaching Forum and EUA invites members to join the 2019 Learning & Teaching Thematic Peer Groups.
Since the release of the European Commission proposal establishing the next EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, several milestones have been reached in the legislative procedure. Here is the latest.
In the framework of the EU-supported project “Transition to university autonomy in Kazakhstan” (TRUNAK), EUA carried out an analysis of the state of play in the country, based on the Autonomy Scorecard. The findings are summarised in a public report.
EUA’s Institutional Evaluation Programme (IEP) evaluated nine higher education institutions in Montenegro. A newly-released system review report, based on the individual evaluations, examines common issues and challenges and proposes recommendations.
The European Union and African Union Commissions announced the publication of the African Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance, under the Harmonisation of African Higher Education Quality Assurance and Accreditation Initiative. EUA was pleased to be in the consortium.
