I am pleased and privileged to address the EUA membership as Secretary General in this first newsletter of 2020. It is with great honour that I have taken this role to serve Europe’s universities.
In 2020, I very much look forward to working with EUA members to develop the Association’s strategic plan for the next five years. Hundreds of members have responded to a dedicated questionnaire over the past month, and I would like to offer my personal appreciation for this valuable input.
We will also be asking universities to respond to several member surveys in the coming months on key topics such as international strategic institutional partnerships and the European Universities Initiative, refugee integration, digitalisation and online learning, as well as Open Science. Your voice is very important and we are very grateful for your cooperation and dedication as we gather information on these crucial areas.
Another decisive topic for our sector this year is Brexit. After 31 January the UK will no longer be a member of the Union. However, as EUA has stated ever since the Referendum, the family of Europe’s universities will remain united. The EUA Secretariat has produced a brief, “Brexit – what now for universities?”
, explaining what has already been agreed and what can be expected in the process towards the future relationship between the EU and the UK, with a focus on areas relevant to universities.
I wish you a very Happy New Year and I am looking forward to meeting you, hopefully at one of EUA’s many events
, in the months to come.
