Scholarship for researchers from Ukraine

Uppsala University has allocated funds for a scholarship directed at Ukrainian researchers who wish to come here to conduct their research. There are up to 20 scholarships available of SEK 150,000 each for a short stay of five months.

The researcher’s own reasons for applying and description of their academic background must be written in English. Applications can be submitted for as long as the Temporary Protection Directive is in force and scholarship funds are available.

A scholarship can only be awarded to a researcher covered by the Temporary Protection Directive who holds a doctorate (Degree of Doctor) at the time of application. Where there are more applicants than the number of scholarships available, a selection will be made on the basis of academic qualifications, the researcher’s own reasons for applying, and reasons from the hosting department.

Background

In April 2022, the Vice-Chancellor decided to allocate funds for scholarships targeting researchers from Ukraine. In total, funds for 20 scholarships (SEK 150,000 each) were allocated. 

In October 2022, the Vice-Chancellor decided to allocate funds for 20 additional scholarships of SEK 150,000 each, where each scholarship is awarded for a short stay of five months. The purpose of these scholarships is to be able to offer researchers sanctuary and enable them to spend time in a research environment.

The scholarships are awarded following a decision and must be preceded by an application from the hosting head of department or equivalent. Applications and decisions are made as they are received.

In order to be eligible for a scholarship, an undertaking from the head of department or equivalent to host the scholarship holder is also required, which means that the department will bear the indirect expenses incurred such as for a room, workplace, computer, etc. The undertaking also means that the department is able to provide human resources who can support the researcher in various matters.
