TNMU held the Canadian-Ukrainian online course “Global Health”

On May 11-22, 2020, teaching staff and students of TNMU Institute of Nursing participated in the joint Canadian-Ukrainian course “Global Health”, initiated within cooperation between Ternopil National Medical University and MacEwan University (Edmonton, Canada).

The course was attended by 13 students of the Faculty of Nursing at MacEwan University and 10 students of TNMU Institute of Nursing. Leaders and developers of the course from the Canadian party were: Larysa Haiduk – Director of Ukrainian Initiatives, Ukrainian Center for Resources and Development at MacEwan University, Elizabeth Burgess-Pinto – RN, PhD, Associate Professor of Nursing and Judee Onyskiw – RN, BScN, Associate Professor at Nursing Sciences Department at MacEwan University. TNMU was represented by Svitlana Yastremska – Doctor of Pedagogy, Head of the Institute of Nursing, Hanna Saturska – Doctor of Medicine, Head of the Department of Public Health and Health Management, Lyudmyla Mazur – Ph.D. in Medicine, Deputy Head of the Institute of Nursing, Borys Lokay – Ph.D. in Medicine, Associate Professor of the Department of Clinical Immunology, Allergology and General Patient Care, Olha Lepiavko-Krekhovska – Ph.D. in Medicine, Assistant of the Department of Clinical Immunology, Allergology and General Patient Care, Nataliia Petrenko – Ph.D. in Medicine, BScN, Associate Professor of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology №2, Natalia Haliiash – Ph.D. in Medicine, MScN, Associate Professor of the Department of Pediatrics №2.

The course was conducted remotely. Its beginning was preceded by considerable preparatory work. Working groups from both universities prepared training materials (video lectures, presentations and theoretical materials), held a series of online meetings with a step-by-step discussion of the stages of the training course.

All training materials were posted on the MacEwan University website on the Blackboard platform. Each teacher and student was given temporary access to these resources.

The video connection was provided by using CiscoWebexMeetings, a subscription program used at MacEwan University.

The aim of the course was to acquaint students with the problems of globalization, which are inextricably linked to health problems in the world, the study of Sustainable Development Goals, officially known as “Transforming our world: the 2030 agenda for sustainable development”, which were adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2015. This year, special attention was paid to the health problems associated with the Covid-19 pandemic in the world, as the disease has spread around the world and significantly affected various aspects of health care. The students’ working program was intense. They were suggested to conduct research and prepare presentations on the specifics of the Covid-19 pandemic in different countries, and find out how health systems and society at large responded to this challenge.

Every day the participants listened to lectures and worked in groups.

In particular, Hanna Saturska and Elizabeth Burgess-Pinto informed the students about alternative health care systems and how they are integrated into the health care system of Ukraine and Canada.

Lyudmyla Mazur, Borys Lokay and Olha Krekhovska-Lepiavko prepared a lecture on the impact of chronic diseases on the course of Covid-19 infection in patients of different ages. The first part of the lecture highlighted the global trend of development and course of chronic diseases over the past 10 years. The second part of the lecture outlined the peculiarities of the outbreaks and spread of Covid-19 in different countries. The third part of the lecture was devoted to the clinical picture of Covid-19 in patients with concomitant chronic diseases and bad habits in different countries. The results of multiple studies conducted in China, the United States, Italy, and France in March-May 2020 were analyzed, as well as data from the WHO and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States.

Nataliia Petrenko and Judee Onyskiw jointly outlined the problem of domestic violence in Ukraine, Canada and the whole world. The lecturers revealed the peculiarities of the organization of social protection of women who suffered from domestic violence during quarantine in connection with Covid-19.

Judee Onyskiw gave an interesting lecture on syndemias, in particular, how different infections or other diseases can affect or be dependent on other factors, such as the economic level in the country, the environmental situation, etc.

The peculiarity of this year’s joint course was that it was joined by employees of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine. Kateryna Balabanova, Director of the Center for Nursing Development of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, gave a lecture in which she revealed the peculiarities of nurses’ work in reforming the health care system in Ukraine, highlighted a number of problems and outlined ways to solve them.

Nataliia Haliiash prepared a lecture on vaccination problems in Ukraine and in the world. The possible impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the level of immunization was discussed, as well as the importance of deepening the knowledge of parents and the public about vaccination as a mechanism to protect children from various infections. The lecturer emphasized the special role of nurses in educational work and in the process of immunization. After the presentation, the lecturer answered numerous questions of the students.

On May 21-22, students presented the results of their research work. Each member of the group, which included Ukrainian and Canadian students, had the opportunity to present their contribution to the joint project. It should be noted that the students worked perfectly well, having conducted an in-depth analysis of the peculiarities of Covid-19 in individual countries, as well as having suggested possible ways to better respond to the health systems of each country to this problem.

Students demonstrated a responsible approach to preparing presentations, as well as excellent teamwork, when each participant had equal opportunities to express themselves.

We express our deepest appreciation to Canadian students for their interest in Ukraine and active participation in this course. We are grateful to Ukrainian and foreign students of the Institute of Nursing for active cooperation and interaction with Canadian colleagues while performing their tasks. We appreciate the efforts of Canadian lecturers Elizabeth Burgess-Pinto and Judee Onyskiw and TNMU teachers Svitlana Yastremska, Hanna Saturska, Lyudmyla Mazur, Borys Lokay, Olha Krekhovska-Lepiavko, Nataliia Haliiash and Nataliia Petrenko, who persistently worked on development and implementation of a joint Ukrainian-Canadian course.
