International Sepsis Expert Lars Jungström Visited TNMU
On May 4, 2026, I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University was visited by renowned Swedish infectious disease specialist Lars Jungström. The guest works at Skaraborg Hospital (Sweden), which is part of the University of Gothenburg system, where he previously headed a department and currently serves as a senior physician.
Lars Jungström is an internationally recognized expert in sepsis. His research focuses on identifying new disease biomarkers, improving early diagnosis methods, and advancing modern treatment approaches. His professional interests also include infection control, HIV infection, and primary immunodeficiencies.
During his visit to the university, an open lecture and a professional discussion with students and faculty members took place. The guest shared practical experience in managing patients with sepsis in European countries, discussed current international treatment protocols, and emphasized the importance of early infection detection and a multidisciplinary approach.

Particular interest was shown in modern methods of laboratory diagnosis of sepsis, the implementation of infection control systems in healthcare facilities, challenges in combating antibiotic resistance, and the specifics of managing patients with HIV infection and immunodeficiencies.

At the end of the meeting, students and faculty had the opportunity to communicate with the guest in an informal setting, take joint photos, and express their gratitude for the informative and inspiring lecture.
In addition to his scientific work, Lars Jungström serves as an infection control supervisor in several hospitals in Ukraine and has repeatedly delivered lectures at medical universities in Ivano-Frankivsk, Kyiv, Lviv, and Vinnytsia. He is also actively involved in volunteer work through the International Medical Christian Association, including medical missions in African countries such as Kenya.


The visit of such a high-level specialist became an important event for the university community and another step toward strengthening international cooperation and improving the quality of medical education.
