From June 25 to 27, 2025, the 30th Annual SESAM Conference<\/strong> (Society for Simulation in Europe) was held in Valencia, Spain<\/strong>\u2014one of the largest European forums in the field of simulation-based medical education. This year\u2019s event gathered over 1,400 participants from 65 countries<\/strong> around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To support Ukraine, the conference organizing committee provided 50 free registration slots<\/strong> for Ukrainian participants. As a result, the Ukrainian delegation included 69 representatives<\/strong>, making it one of the largest scientific delegations from a single country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ternopil National Medical University <\/strong>was represented at the conference by Associate Professors Nataliia Haliiash, Oksana Sydorenko<\/strong>, and Halyna Tsymbaliuk<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The theme of this year\u2019s conference was: \u201cDeveloping, Adopting and Embedding Innovative Simulation.\u201d<\/strong> Over the course of three days, participants presented 487 scientific reports and poster presentations<\/strong>, showcasing practical experience in implementing innovations in simulation-based medical education, interdisciplinary training, development of clinical reasoning, and team interaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The TNMU representatives presented the following research:<\/p>\n\n\n

  • Halyna Tsymbaliuk<\/strong> \u2013 oral presentation: \u201cAnalysis of the Readiness of Training Departments of the Emergency Medical Services Centers of Ukraine to Conduct Retraining of Medical Personnel of the EMS System.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Nataliia Hali<\/strong>iash<\/strong> \u2013 two e-poster presentations:
    • \u201cDevelopment and Assessment of Practical Skills in Pediatrics for International Medical Students Using OSCE\u201d;<\/em><\/li><\/ul>
        \n
      • \u201cCommunication Curriculum Assessment From the Students’ Perspective\u201d<\/em> \u2013 prepared within the framework of the Ukrainian-Swiss Project \u201cMedical Education Development.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul><\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Oksana Sydorenko<\/strong> \u2013 e-poster presentation: \u201cClinical Reasoning: How to Make a Hidden Curriculum Visible?\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n

        Traditionally, the SESAM conference included a large exhibition<\/strong> where leading global manufacturers of simulation equipment demonstrated their products: training manikins, VR and AR systems, simulators for ultrasound diagnostics, endoscopic procedures, basic and advanced resuscitation skills, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Among the simulators were highly realistic manikins<\/strong>, visually indistinguishable from real patients, as well as basic models<\/strong> that, despite their simplicity, are highly effective for developing individual clinical skills and educational scenarios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Of particular interest were innovative hybrid simulation complexes<\/strong> combining physical, virtual, and AI technologies. For example, an abdominal palpation simulator (available in adult and pediatric versions) integrated:<\/p>\n\n\n

        • Tactile feedback<\/strong> \u2013 allowing students to practice manual examination techniques;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • AR visualization<\/strong> \u2013 enabling real-time visualization of anatomical structures in normal and pathological states;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • Interactive clinical scenarios<\/strong> \u2013 powered by built-in artificial intelligence, enabling students to interview the \u201cpatient,\u201d perform physical exams, observe reactions, and formulate a preliminary diagnosis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n

          Another example of advanced technology was the Alex manikin<\/strong>\u2014a next-generation simulation patient designed for training in physical examination and patient care. Alex<\/strong> combines a realistic anatomical model with built-in AI-powered communication<\/strong>, enabling students to interact in real time, respond to patient complaints, make clinical decisions, and receive immediate feedback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          A notable trend this year was inclusivity in simulation education<\/strong>\u2014many manufacturers showcased manikins representing elderly patients or individuals with disabilities, including those in wheelchairs. This marks an important step toward realistic modeling of diverse clinical situations<\/strong> and should be considered when updating simulation equipment and designing training scenarios at TNMU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Participants were also impressed by the high level of technological support<\/strong> at the event. Organizers developed a mobile app that allowed attendees to view the full conference program, receive event reminders, evaluate sessions and workshops, review abstracts, and network with other participants via chat or email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Participation in SESAM 2025<\/strong> provided a valuable opportunity to explore the latest trends in simulation-based medical education, establish professional connections, and present the experience of Ukrainian universities<\/strong> in simulation training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
