At the beginning of the 2025-2026 academic year, the Ukraine-Switzerland project “Development of Medical Education” announced a competitive selection for participation in the “School of Mindful Communication.” This unique educational space was open to everyone working or studying in higher education institutions, inviting them to submit applications and justify how the knowledge gained would be applied in their daily activities. The overall interest in this initiative was extremely high: project coordinators received over 200 applications from all over Ukraine. The competition committee selected 30 individuals for training at the “School of Mindful Communication,” including seven representatives from Ternopil National Medical University, namely: Associate Professor of the Department of Emergency Medical Care Oksana Sydorenko, Associate Professor of the Department of Public Health and Health Care Management Yuriy Petrashyk, Associate Professor of the Department of Pediatrics No. 3 Nataliia Haliyash, Associate Professor of the Department of Ukrainian Language and Head of the Department of Communication and Marketing Nadiia Oliynyk, Associate Professor of the Department of Therapy and Family Rehabilitation Iryna Borovyk, Press Secretary of TNMU Yanina Chaykivska, and fifth-year medical student Yaroslav Bilyk.<\/p>\n\n\n

The “School of Mindful Communication” consists of three mandatory sessions, scheduled for October 23-24, November 20-21, and December 11-12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the first session, held in Lviv at the end of October, invited trainers made every effort to help participants see communication in a broader context, specifically as a process that shapes culture, leadership, and mutual respect. The focus was on fundamental principles, ethics and responsibility, philosophy, and leadership as key aspects of interaction. The discussion centered on how every word influences the educational and professional medical environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trainers for the first session were: Matviy Khrenov (co-founder of the Ukrainian Health Care Center (UHC), curator and instructor of the “Health Care Management” program, lecturer at the School of Health Care Management at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, leadership and strategic management courses), Vakhtang Kebuladze (Professor at the Department of Theoretical and Practical Philosophy at the Faculty of Philosophy, T. Shevchenko Kyiv National University, laureate of the Yuriy Sheveliov Prize of the Ukrainian PEN in 2016), and Yuliia Martynenko (communications coordinator for the Ukraine-Switzerland project “Development of Medical Education”).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The training program was initiated by Matviy Khrenov, who carefully analyzed the very phenomenon of communication. He also focused on why communication is critically important for true leaders. Participants, together with the trainer, examined leadership types and deeply analyzed the foundations of power. The primary emphasis was on the fact that communication is not just a tool, but a decisive factor that shapes a leader’s influence and their ability to manage and lead a team effectively. Clear, mindful communication is the foundation upon which trust and a shared vision are built in educational and medical environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vakhtang Kebuladze encouraged participants to reflect on the ideas of great philosophers who, over the centuries, have tried to understand the very nature of human capacity for dialogue. He emphasized that communication goes far beyond a simple exchange of words. From his perspective, it is a way of experiencing the Other, a unique opportunity to understand and accept the inner world of the interlocutor, which is a fundamental condition for humane and ethical communication, especially important in the fields of medicine and education. Vakhtang Kebuladze provided an ethical and worldview depth to the topic of communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yuliia Martynenko provided a detailed breakdown of communication mechanics. Special attention was given to identifying and understanding how toxicity arises and manifests in interpersonal communication. The main value of her training was in providing participants with concrete tools and approaches for preventing toxic interactions, which is critically important for creating a healthy and productive educational environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The participants have two more sessions ahead, dedicated to developing skills for constructive, ethical, and appropriate public communication in the educational environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
