From 1 to 4 September 2026, as part of the implementation of the ARIVE project<\/strong>, a four-day Training of Trainers (ToT)<\/strong> programme was held at Petre Shotadze Tbilisi Medical Academy<\/strong> (Tbilisi, Georgia). The programme focused on research supervision, mentoring, and virtual team-based learning in research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The training was delivered by Professor Rob Bongaardt and Professor Etty Nielsen from the University of South-Eastern Norway<\/strong>. Representatives of the ARIVE partner institutions took part in the programme as the project is preparing for its next implementation phase. Ternopil National Medical University was represented by Dmytro Vakulenko<\/strong>, Head of the Department of Medical Informatics, and Oksana Bahrii-Zaiats<\/strong>, Associate Professor of the Department of Medical Physics of Diagnostic and Therapeutic Equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The programme focused on a key question for ARIVE: how can supervisors and educators support students and early-career researchers through VRS (Virtual Research Semesters)<\/strong>, where learning takes place through collaboration, inquiry, dialogue, and research practice? During the training, participants explored evidence-based approaches to supervision, motivation, psychological safety, interdisciplinary teamwork, and mentoring. Rather than relying on lengthy lectures, the programme emphasized active learning methods, including individual reflection, small-group work, case discussions, plenary dialogue, and practical exercises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Particular attention was paid to the role of supervisors and mentors in supporting research group activities. Participants discussed how to create conditions in which students take responsibility for their work, make progress, build connections with other group members, and learn to navigate different interdisciplinary research fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Training of Trainers also reflected the working methods that will be used during ARIVE Virtual Research Semesters. Participants were encouraged to think not only about what<\/strong> should be taught, but also about how research-based learning can contribute to a virtual, interdisciplinary, and international environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The final part of the programme focused on practice. Participants worked in groups to design and deliver short sessions related to different stages of a Virtual Research Semester, including team building, developing research questions, using artificial intelligence as a team member, interdisciplinary thinking, feedback, and reflection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On 1 September 2026, the ARIVE consortium<\/strong> held an in-person meeting in Tbilisi, Georgia, bringing together representatives of the partner institutions to review progress and coordinate the next stage of project implementation. The meeting took place following the successful completion of the first six months of ARIVE activities. During this initial period, the consortium established the foundations of the project, including coordination structures, planning for the trainee cohorts, the VRS curriculum, dissemination tools, as well as the project website and social media platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The meeting in Tbilisi focused on the transition from preparation to active implementation. The partners discussed planned online training sessions and courses, including their thematic focus, target groups, formats, timelines, and institutional responsibilities. These discussions will help ensure that ARIVE learning activities are coordinated, realistic, and aligned with the project’s broader objective of strengthening research education through virtual exchange. Dissemination and visibility issues were also discussed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another important part of the meeting was the further development of the ARIVE governance structure<\/strong>, including the establishment of a Steering Committee and an ARIVE Academic Board\/Curriculum Committee<\/strong>. These bodies will support strategic coordination, academic planning, and decision-making related to curricula throughout the subsequent stages of the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The meeting provided partners with a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas, clarify responsibilities, and coordinate their contributions. It represented an important step in preparing ARIVE for broader implementation, strengthening its public visibility, and fostering future engagement among students and academic communities across borders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
