Each station assesses\none or more areas of clinical competence (for example, history taking,\ncommunication, physical examination skills, etc.). The assessment applies a\nstandardized approach, which includes standardized patients (SPs), standardized\nscoring tools, and standardized exam-day logistics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Basic principles of OSCE <\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u041e \u2013 \u043ebjective<\/em> \u2013 all students perform tasks of the same complexity,\nwhich are evaluated using <strong>the standardized scoring tool (check-list)<\/strong>; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>S \u2013 structured<\/em> \u2013 every student experiences the same problems, and is\nasked to perform the same task, within the same timeframe. Students move\nsequentially from one station to another one according to a certain route,\nperforming tasks of the same level of difficulty; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>C \u2013 \u0441linical<\/em> \u2013 The tasks in each OSCE station represent real-life\nclinical situations in which students apply the acquired theoretical knowledge\nand practical skills; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>E \u2013 \u0435xamination<\/em> \u2013 competence and skills of students are assessed on\nthe basis of the above principles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Venue<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>OSCE will take place in the inter-departmental Simulation Training\n Center. During the exam,\nongoing video surveillance is underway. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Who should pass OSCE?<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th courses on the specialty \u201cMedicine\u201d as\nwell as students of the 3rd and 4th courses on the specialty \u201cDentistry\u201d should\npass the OSCE in the last month of the semester before the semester\nexaminations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One exam group, numbering 12 students, passes the exam simultaneously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Examination groups are formed by the dean&#8217;s office before the exam. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>OSCE timetable <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<table class=\"wp-block-table\"><tbody><tr><td>\n  \u0406 period<strong><\/strong>\n  <\/td><td>\n  9.00&nbsp;\u2013 10.25\n  <\/td><\/tr><tr><td>\n  \u0406\u0406 period<strong><\/strong>\n  <\/td><td>\n  10.35&nbsp;\u2013 12.00\n  <\/td><\/tr><tr><td>\n  \u0406\u0406\u0406 period<strong><\/strong>\n  <\/td><td>\n  12.15&nbsp;\u2013 13.40\n  <\/td><\/tr><tr><td>\n  \u0406V period<strong><\/strong>\n  <\/td><td>\n  13.50&nbsp;\u2013 15.15\n  <\/td><\/tr><tr><td>\n  V period<strong><\/strong>\n  <\/td><td>\n  15.30&nbsp;\u2013 16.55\n  <\/td><\/tr><tr><td>\n  V\u0406 period<strong><\/strong>\n  <\/td><td>\n  17.05&nbsp;\u2013 18.20\n  <\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>OSCE subjects <\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The exam includes 12 stations for each course: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 on the specialty \u201cMedicine\u201d: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; for the 3rd course: Internal Medicine Propaedeutics (5 stations),\nPropaedeutic Pediatrics (3 stations), General surgery (4 stations); <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; for the 4th course: Internal Medicine (3 stations), Surgery (3\nstations), Pediatrics (3 stations), Neurology (2 stations), Psychiatrics (1\nstation); <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; for the 5th course: Internal Medicine (3 stations), Surgery (2\nstations), Anesthesiology and Intensive Medicine (1 station), Pediatrics (3\nstations), Infectious Diseases (1 station), Obstetrics and Gynecology (2\nstations). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 on the specialty \u201cDentistry\u201d: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; for the 3rd course: Dental Therapy (4 stations), Orthopedic Dentistry\n(4 stations), Dental Surgery (4 stations); <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; for the 4th course: Pediatric Dental Therapy (4 stations), Internal\nMedicine (4 stations), Surgery (4 stations). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How to get prepared to OSCE? <\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To prepare for OSCE, use the practical skills algorithms that are posted\non the sites of the respective departments or the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/a\/tdmu.edu.ua\/en_login\/preparation-to-objective-structured-clinical-examination-osce\">Link<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>On the day of OSCE <\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the day of OSCE you must arrive 30 minutes prior to the exam to a Simulation Training Center\nfor registration and instructing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>On the day of the examination, you <em>must<\/em> bring: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Your student\u2019s card as your identification <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 A medical uniform (a white gown or surgical suit) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Changes shoes <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 A stethoscope <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 A second-hand mechanical wrist-watch (optionally). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It is <em>prohibited<\/em> to bring and use these items into the\nexamination: <\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Educational and auxiliary study materials <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Phones or communication devices (phone, tablet, reader, smart-watch,\netc.) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Paper and pen (these will be supplied) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Food and drink. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Just before the exam<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The liable instructor will identify your person and register your\npresence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides, he will explain exam behavior and security, the number and\nlength of examination stations, the time between stations, the signal system\nused to keep time and other important information. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will be given a badge with a sequential number (it will correspond\nto the number of the station from which you start the exam) and your personal\nidentification number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A route sheet will be issued to you, which will indicate the path of\npassing the OSCE stations. The number of the station and its name will be\nclearly indicated on the doors of each room. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will be required to sign the confidentiality and non-disclosure\ndocument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Passing OSCE (How to move along the route) <\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After receiving the instructions, you are pre-assigned to start at a\nspecific station indicated on your badge (your sequential number) and then pass\nto the next number of station. For example, if there are 12 stations, and your\nfirst station number is 4, you might start at Station No.4 and rotate through\nstations 5,6,7, 8,9,10,11,12,1,2,3. Signs throughout the examination route will\nhelp you navigate through your stations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Performing tasks at stations starts and ends with a ringing tone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In front of the station door, you will see instructions for that\nstation. With a ringtone, you should enter the room, receive a task, and\nexecute it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All the writing forms you will be given on a station should be handled\nto the examiner of the station after you will complete the task. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Time to complete the task is 6 minutes. At the end of this time, the\nnext ringtone will signal that you must exit the room and go to the next room\n(station) along the route. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If in 6 minutes you did not handle the task, stop working and leave the\nroom with a ringtone, handling to the examiner the writing forms. If you handle\nthe task before the time of station completing, you must stay in the room until\nthe ending of 6-min period (it will be singled by ringtone). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Performing tasks at the following stations starts with the next\nringtone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The time interval between stations, to pass from one station to another,\nis equal to 1 min. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You and other candidates will rotate through all the stations on the\ntrack, so to pass through all 12 stations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the examination begins, washroom and other breaks are not provided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Physical arrangement of stations <\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each examination station is unique. The equipment and setting in the\nstation will vary depending on the purpose of the station. For example, if a\nphysical examination is part of the station, you can expect to find: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 An exam table, sometimes with the phantom or patient already sitting\non it or in a chair. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 A kit of tools for you to use. You will have to bring your own\nstethoscope for the exam. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 A copy of the scenario task will be provided inside each station for\nyou. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 a response form that must be filled out by the student (at some\nstations). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the station requires other materials, such as a growth chart, lab\nresults or other relevant information, these will be in the station. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Violation of the rules <\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are late, <strong>you will not be allowed<\/strong> to take the exam. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the exam <strong>you are prohibited<\/strong> from communicating with each\nother and with an examiner. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you violate the rules of safety and conduct or use the educational\nmaterials and\/or gadgets, your personal exam results may <strong>be cancelled<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Communication during the exam <\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An examiner will be observing, assessing and recording your performance\nwhile you do the task. Do not pay attention to an examiner facial expression or\nmaking marks on the score sheet. Do your best to focus on the patient and\ndemonstrate your clinical competence without focusing on the examiner. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can apply to the examiner in case of deterioration of well-being or\nin force majeure circumstances. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The examiner may address you verbally in case of: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 If you break the safety and conduct rules. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 If you misinterpret the task in the instructions, the examiner may\nredirect you by saying something like, \u201cPlease reread the instructions\u201d or \u201cCarry\nout auscultation at the point indicated by blue color, please\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 after you have performed some maneuver, the examiner may provide the\nresults of the maneuver as if you had completed it. For example, after your\ndemonstration of chest percussion the examiner may then say, \u201cThere is dullness\nin the paravertebral area on the right.\u201d If no information is provided, move\non. Do not look to the examiner for information or ask if they have information\nfor you (all necessary data should be available in the task given). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How to repass OSCE? <\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In case of absence or negative result on the exam, you will have the\nopportunity to repass it in due time according to the schedule of the dean&#8217;s office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>OSCE evaluation <\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At each station, the examiner, without interfering with the process of\nperforming the task, evaluates your actions and indicates the result by marking\nit in a check-list. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The maximum score for the task at 1 station is 1 (one) point. The\nmaximum number of points for OSCE is 12. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The exam results will be known on the day of passing after processing\nall the check-lists. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The exam is considered to be compiled if you scored at least 7.0 points.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If Not Agree With the Result <\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you do not agree with the exam results, you can file an appeal within\n2 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The appeal is considered by the commission, the decision is taken after\nviewing the video recording of your exam. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What happens after the examination? <\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you are finished the OSCE, you have to return your candidate badge\nand pen (pencil). Then you leave the examination floor through the \u2018Exit\u2019\npassage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>OSCE security requirements <\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students are prohibited to discuss, copy, reproduce or share examination\ncontent in any way, at any time before, during, and after the exam. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Other tips <\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do not be tempted to do MORE than what the station instructions require.<\/strong> For example, if\nthe instructions say to \u201ctake a focused history\u201d, then do exactly that&nbsp;\u2013 do not complete a full patient interview covering\nissues that may not be relevant. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do be guided by the information that the patient tells you.<\/strong><strong> <\/strong>Apply your clinical reasoning\nto the patient\u2019s pertinent answers during the history and physical exam\nportions of the stations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do not make assumptions about the purpose of the station.<\/strong> You may think, for\nexample, \u201cOh, this must be the depression station\u201d, but keep an open mind. You\nare being assessed on your active clinical skills.
