We want such a large-scale event to take place in regional centres too. The Congress has been already held in Chernivtsi, Kharkiv, Donetsk, Odessa, now it is hosted in Ternopil. After all, there is a national medical university here, named after the eminent biochemist Ivan Horbachevsky. I think that holding the XII Ukrainian Biochemical Congress within the walls of this university is interesting for both teachers and students, as well as for local doctors.

The university is named after Ivan Horbachevsky. Unfortunately, in Ukraine little is known about him. He was a wonderful and unique person, a distinguished scientist and health organizer. He was born in the village of Zarubyntsi near Ternopil. He was fluent in German and English but was also fluent in Ukrainian. Becoming a biochemist, he made a great contribution into the world science – he was the first to synthesize uric acid, the first to predict that proteins are composed of amino acids. Now it is known that Ivan Horbachevsky was one of the nominees for the 1911 Nobel Prize. That is why we decided to organize a Congress of biochemists in Ternopil,” Serhii Komisarenko added.

He also read congratulations from the President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Academician Borys Paton.

The Head of Ternopil Regional Council Viktor Ovcharuk said: “We understand that it is both – a great honour for all of us, and a recognition of the achievements of Ternopil scientists. On the other hand, it is equally important for us that the Congress is dedicated to the 165th anniversary of the birth of our countryman Ivan Horbachevsky, an outstanding biochemist, hygienist and epidemiologist, terminologist, social, political and educational figure. It is also a recognition of the contribution of this multifaceted personality to the world science. This is also important since biochemistry is not only a theoretical but also a practical field that enhances our lives.
