December 16, 2022On December 8, 2022, the Volunteer Centre of Ternopil National Medical University handed over five powerful thermal coolers for the evacuation teams of military doctors who transport the wounded from the battlefield to hospitals. Doctors and paramedics store saline solutions, blood substitutes and other medicines in these refrigerators. According to military doctors, thanks to such equipment, the loss of human lives is reduced by 30%. Five evacuation teams will be equipped with these devices.
Furthermore, the TNMU Volunteer Centre purchased and handed over professional scissors, which can be used to easily cut several layers of clothing and berets. According to military doctors, this significantly saves time in case of massive bleeding. In such cases, the medical team has only 15-20 seconds to effectively apply a tourniquet and remove a wounded person from the battlefield as quickly as possible. The quick cutting of the boots in the event of a foot injury makes it possible to remove the shoes with minimal traumatic consequences and painlessly.
Moreover, at the request of the evacuation teams, the Volunteer Centre of TNMU formed a consignment of medicines and medical supplies.
All this was transferred to the Donetsk and Luhansk directions of the front line.

November 15, 2022The staff of Ternopil National Medical University began active volunteering back in 2014, when the war in eastern Ukraine started. Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Russia in Ukraine, already at the end of February, the Volunteer Centre of TNMU was established for the coordination and maximum effective provision of assistance to civilians, Territorial Defence Forces, the military, and hospitals.
Thanks to cooperation with Professor Rostyslav Bilyi and Danylo Halytskyi Lviv National Medical University and thanks to the support of RECOOP HST Association, we received another batch of Celox analogue – chitosan haemostatic blood coagulation activator for the formation of individual military first-aid kits and tactical backpacks for military medics.
Bleeding is the main cause of death in the battlefield, and timely pre-medical, primary medical care plays an extremely important role. These are things that save lives. Conducted studies have proven that Chitosan haemostatic blood coagulation activator provides even faster coagulation compared to Celox. Also, the drug is well washed off the surface of the wound with a slightly acidic solution (0.1% solution of acetic acid).
We express our sincere appreciation to Dr. Sandor Vari (Cedars – Sinai Medical Center, USA; Regional Cooperation in the Fields of Health, Science and Technology Association/RECOOP HST Association) for supporting the Ukrainian people in these times and financing such an important project as the development of a haemostatic agent that saves the lives of our soldiers, who defend the independence of Ukraine and Europe. We thank our partner, the Ukrainian-German Academic Society, for a reliable shoulder and an active position and constant daily assistance to Ukraine, including on the scientific front.
Thanks to the cooperation with Professor R. Bilyi, more than 400 packages of haemostatic agent have already been delivered to frontline by our military. By the end of the year, it is planned to produce and transfer to the front line more than 1,000 units of the blood coagulation activator.
Let us stay strong and keep working for our victory! [...]

November 14, 2022Recently, the Volunteer Centre of Ternopil National Medical University received huge humanitarian consignment of medical supplies for people with diabetes from foreign partners. On November 14, 2022, TNMU volunteers handed over a large amount of these products to the “To Victory for the sake of Life” charitable foundation, which operates in Kharkiv. A few days ago, this foundation sent a request to our university with a request to help provide diabetes patients with medicines and specific means.
“To Victory for the sake of Life” charitable foundation deals with targeted assistance to those suffering from diabetes. We know that Kharkiv is constantly under fire and needs help and support. It is good that there are people who, even in very difficult conditions, risking their own lives, distribute medicine to sick city residents.
Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine, the Volunteer Centre of TNMU has been operating a headquarters for providing assistance to patients with diabetes, headed by Victoria Furdela, Associate Professor of the Department of Paediatrics № 2. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, she takes care of children with diabetes in the Ternopil region, and with the beginning of the war, Mrs. Victoria helped all those who were forced to leave their homes.
Today’s shipment is also symbolic of the fact that on November 14, the world community reminds everyone of the importance of preventing and fighting diabetes. Ternopil National Medical University constantly participates in all-Ukrainian events and constantly works in the educational direction. The School of Diabetes was created a few years ago by the joint efforts of TNMU and Ternopil Regional Children’s Hospital, in which Victoria Furdela and our students teach children with this disease to lead a healthy lifestyle in order to minimize the consequences of diabetes as much as possible.
