History of the Faculty of Dentistry
Faculty of Dentistry of I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University Ministry of Health of Ukraine was established on 01 September 2004.
In January 2006, the first specialized departments of dentistry were organized. Students of 2nd year of Dental Faculty began studying dental disciplines: Propaedeutics of Therapeutic dentistry, Orthopedic dentistry and Pediatric dentistry. At that time, the department was located in the study building on St. Ruska, 12. The head of department was professor Stepan Cherkashyn.

In September 2006, the department of dentistry reorganized and were created three specialized departments: Therapeutic and Pediatric dentistry, Dental Propaedeutics discipline and the Department of Surgical and Prosthetic dentistry.
To improve the quality of studying and learning methods of students, improving teaching, research and medical care in the 2009/2010 academic year, the reorganization of departments was done. Four specialized departments of dental faculty were formed- Dental Therapy, Dental Surgery, Orthopedic Dentistry and Pediatric Dentistry that function until now.

Founder of the dental school in Ternopil is rightly considered to be professor Stepan Ivanovich Cherkashyn – he was the first Dean of Faculty of Dentistry in 2004-2006.

During two years (2006-2008) the Dean of the Dental faculty was professor Olexander V. Avdeev. He is currently Head of the department of Pediatric dentistry; he is talented scientist and a wise mentor.

During six years (2008-2014) Dean of Dentistry faculty was Professor Yaroslav Nagirniy – an outstanding personality, a gifted scholar and a wise mentor. Today he is a Head of Dental Surgery Department.

Study process at the faculty is done according to the Educational and Professional program “Dentistry” second (master) level of higher education specialty 221 Dentistry, Field of knowledge 22 “Health care”. Guarantor of the educational program is Doctor of Science in Medicine, Professor Luchynskyi Mykhailo.
The educational process is provided by 52 highly qualified scientists and practitioners, among them there are 7 doctors of sciences, professors; 45 candidates of sciences (33 associate professors).
The teaching at the Faculty is carried out in compliance with the “Regulations on the organization of educational process in I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University” and “Methodological guidelines for teachers on the educational process in the Ternopil National Medical University” on the basis of academic buildings on St. Olena Teliha (former St. Chekhova), 7. Dental Surgery department has clinical base at regional clinical hospital at the Maxilla-facial surgery department.
Departments of the faculty introduce new teaching methods and programs in order to improve the educational process. In accordance with the academic programs, the teacher teams of the departments have prepared methodical instructions, banks of test tasks, study materials for lectures and practical classes, video lectures. Academic programs of disciplines and syllabuses are posted on the web-pages of university departments.
Clinical training of students takes place on the basis of the University Dental Clinic, using modern advanced methods of diagnosis, prevention and treatment of patients with dental pathology.

Training in simulation classes help students to develop their confidence in practical skills, students can train new procedures in a safe environment on dental simulators.

The possibilities of modern computer technology and the latest equipment are widely used in the educational, scientific, medical and diagnostic process.
The faculty created the conditions for research. There are student scientific societies. Students take part in scientific national and international conferences, student competitions, workshops and congresses.
Interesting and multifaceted student life is organically complemented by art groups and sports sections.
Beyond the clinics and classrooms, our students are engaged in extracurricular work, they are involved in charity raising money and sending them to those who are in need.
We shape the future of dentistry by preparing the next generation of clinicians, scientists, educators, and leaders in the profession. We are proud of our graduates who continue their further dental profession by providing the best possible care for their patients and communities.
