The Educational and Research Institute of Medical and Biological Problems was established by the Order of the Rector of the University No. 201 of June 8, 2005, and has been functioning since July 15, 2005, with the aim of training present-day specialists who must have sufficient medical knowledge and skills, as well as conducting comprehensive scientific research in the Institute's field of expertise.

The Educational and Research Institute is a structural unit of the Ivan Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, located in the University building at 2 Slovatsky Street, and includes 4 departments with their classrooms equipped in accordance with the training and research requirements. In the premises of the Institute's departments there are also offices of the teaching and support staff, an educational and biological museum, a lecture hall, a laboratory of microbiological research, a computer classroom where students can master the knowledge on the subject using virtual training and control software, videos, educational materials presented on the University's WEB-portal in the Intranet system and on the Internet, etc.

The Institute of Biomedical Problems is led by a director who oversees its operations and strategic direction. The directorship has seen several notable individuals throughout the history of the Institute. From its establishment until June 2012, Professor Stepan Vadziuk served as the director of the Institute, providing leadership and guidance during its early years. In June 2012, Professor Serhii Klymniuk assumed the role of director, bringing his expertise and vision to further develop the Institute. Following that, from September 2013 to 2015, Professor Larysa Fedoniuk took the helm, contributing to the Institute's growth and success during her tenure. In the subsequent years of 2015-2016, Professor Oleksandr Holiachenko assumed the position of director, bringing his valuable experience and knowledge to the Institute. Since 2016, Associate Professor Natalia Tkachuk has been leading the Institute, steering its activities and fostering its continued development. Under her guidance, the Institute continues to thrive and fulfill its mission of providing quality education and conducting impactful research in the field of biomedical problems. The leadership of these esteemed individuals has played a crucial role in shaping the Institute and its contributions to the field of biomedicine.

The Institute has established an Academic Council, which is its governing body. The Council is composed of teachers with academic degrees and academic titles. The work of the Academic Council is carried out in accordance with a plan that is developed and approved annually. The work plan of the Academic Council highlights the main areas of the Institute's activities in educational, methodological, research, and educational work, as well as addresses issues related to educational and methodological support and equipment of the material and technical base. Based on the decisions of the Academic Council, the Director of the Institute issues orders that are binding on the faculty, staff and students.

PROSPECTS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE INSTITUTE

The staff of the Institute of Biomedical Problems will continue to further modernize the educational process on the basis of scientific and innovative activities.

 To improve the educational process, it is planned to:

  1. Increase the number of teachers who possess English language proficiency at B2 and C1 levels.
  2. The staff of the departments should actively continue publishing activities by preparing English-language textbooks and manuals in the disciplines taught at the Institute, as well as educational literature in the state language, which is not enough in the University library fund.
  3. Participate in international research teams, international internships in foreign research centers.
  4. Constantly improve the professional level of research and teaching staff (advanced training courses, participation in seminars, conferences, workshops, trainings, etc.)
  5. To be actively published in leading periodicals included in the scientific and metric databases Scopus and Web of Sciense and to increase the level of citation of articles by researchers of the Institute in professional foreign publications.
  6. To take an active part in competitions for the implementation of state and international scientific programs to receive grants provided by targeted funding.
  7. To carry out current repairs of the Institute's premises, to equip thematic classrooms with the necessary equipment to ensure the educational process at the modern level.

In the future, the Institute of Biomedical Problems plans to raise the level of scientific research to the highest international standards, planning and implementation in accordance with the requirements of the present and the needs of the future. Fruitful cooperation with scientists of the Ivan Puluj Ternopil National Technical University and Vinnytsya National Pirogov Memorial Medical University on conducting scientific research is planned; cooperation with the Mykola Skakun Institute of Pharmacology, Hygiene and Medical Biochemistry in organizing and conducting scientific and practical conferences.

The use of high-tech methods of informatization and computer technologies in the educational process and raising the level of scientific research of the Institute will contribute to the harmonious development of professional, moral and physical qualities of both the teacher and the student—a future specialist in medicine.
