New rector of Ternopil National Medical University named after I.Ya. Horbachevsky appointed
Minister of Health Viktor Lyashko appointed a new rector of Ternopil National Medical University named after I. Horbachevsky (TNMU). He became Petro Lykhatsky. Thus, the Ministry of Health supported the choice of the university staff – on December 5, 2025, almost 60% of the staff voted for Petro Lykhatsky in the elections for the head (440 votes).
Petro Lykhatsky is 46 years old. He has 23 years of pedagogical and scientific experience at TNMU. He was an associate professor, and later – a professor of the Department of Medical Biochemistry. From 2014 to 2015, he held the position of head of the university’s educational department, was the head of the primary trade union organization, and for the past six years – the dean of the medical faculty. He is the author and co-author of more than 250 scientific publications.

Since 2020, Petro Lykhatsky has been a member of the expert commission of the Center for the Quality of Education of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine in the field of “Biochemistry”, and since 2024 he has headed the working group of the Center for the Quality of Education of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine on the development, writing and review of test tasks in the field of “Medicine” (Step 2).
The new rector sees TNMU as a modern medical institution of higher education of the European level, focused on high quality education, science and clinical training, with digital transformation of the educational process and strong integration with the healthcare system. Among the priorities are the modernization of educational programs, training of specialists in scarce specialties, development of postgraduate education, scientific research, international partnerships and support for young scientists.
The Ministry of Health of Ukraine congratulates Professor Lykhatsky on his election to the responsible position of head of TNMU and wishes him success in implementing plans for the development of the educational institution.
Reference: Ivan Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University was founded in 1957. The university has 58 departments, 36 of which are clinical, located at 25 bases of regional and city health care institutions, as well as in Rivne and Zhytomyr. Most of these clinical bases are specialized centers where highly specialized medical care is provided. TNMU has a department of disaster medicine and military medicine, where students and interns can undergo training under the reserve medical service officer training program for two years and receive a military rank. The university operates and develops a simulation training center, where students can acquire professional competencies in accordance with professional standards. The main projects of the National Health Service of Ukraine at Ternopil National Medical University include a dental department, a mental health center, and a primary health care center.
