TNMU scientific schools develop research areas, traditions and academic communities.

Scientific School of Pharmacology
Founder

The Scientific School of Pharmacology traces its origins to 1957, when it was founded by the distinguished researcher and educator, Professor Mykola Petrovych Skakun. His scientific vision, professionalism and dedication laid a strong foundation for a school combining rigorous research, teaching excellence and practical application.
Under his leadership, the principal research areas took shape and a team of like-minded researchers was established. Their work advanced experimental pharmacology, the study of drug pharmacodynamics and the safe use of medicines.
In subsequent years, Professor Kateryna Andriivna Posokhova continued these traditions, expanding the research agenda, establishing new areas of investigation and supporting the training of a new generation of specialists.
Today, the school is an established research community combining many years of experience with modern approaches to drug mechanisms, pharmacotherapy and experimental pharmacology, and contributing to the development of medicine in Ukraine.

Professor I. S. Smiian's Scientific School of Pediatrics
Founder

The formation of this pediatric scientific school is associated with Professor Ivan Semenovych Smiian. His research developed in pediatric balneology, gastroenterology, nephrology, pulmonology and neonatology.
In 1961, he defended his Candidate of Sciences dissertation on resort-based treatment of chronic hepatocholecystitis in children. In 1968, he defended his Doctor of Sciences dissertation on chronic diseases of the hepatobiliary system in children and their sanatorium and resort treatment.
Professor Smiian provided the scientific basis for, and developed methods of, sanatorium and resort treatment for children with somatic disorders. From 1981 to 1997, he served as rector of the institution now known as Ternopil National Medical University. More than 40 Candidate of Sciences dissertations and four Doctor of Sciences dissertations were defended under his supervision. His students and successors continue to develop the school.

Scientific School of Contemporary Issues in Nervous System Disorders
Founder

The scientific school 'Contemporary Issues in Nervous System Disorders' developed at the Department of Neurology under the leadership of Professor Svitlana Ivanivna Shkrobot. Over the years, the school has trained generations of highly qualified specialists, completed numerous dissertation projects and established research areas addressing current challenges in neurology.
Today, the school continues to develop, bringing together research, clinical practice and education, and promoting the application of modern advances in neurology.

Scientific School of Social Medicine and Healthcare Organization
Founder

The school developed at the Department of Social Hygiene and Healthcare Organization, established in 1958. Its founder was Associate Professor Klavdiia Havrylivna Horshukova. Its research traditions were continued by Heorhii Havrylovych Konopelko and Professor Oleksandr Makarovych Holiachenko.
The school's subsequent development has been associated with research into medical care organization, prevention, healthcare management, and social and medical issues. Professor Arkadii Havrylovych Shulhai continued these traditions and expanded the school's research in public health.

Scientific School of Current Issues in Childhood Pathology
Founder

The school's development is associated with research into the pathogenesis of bronchial asthma in children, mechanisms of endogenous intoxication, free-radical oxidation and membrane disorders. In 2000–2005, studies of osteogenic changes in children with somatic and allergic disorders enabled the development of modified treatment regimens.
In 2011–2014, research involving young children with iron-deficiency anemia identified combined zinc, copper and magnesium deficiencies and associated immune changes. In 2015–2017, the school expanded into molecular genetic studies of bronchial asthma and personalized approaches, including investigations of ADRB2 and TNFα gene variants.
In 2019, a pharmacogenetic approach to asthma management was proposed, including prediction of disease risk and differentiated emergency treatment according to ADRB2 genotype. The school's work is reflected in 11 patents, 11 information letters for healthcare practice, seven monographs and 13 teaching manuals. Under Professor Nataliia Banadyha's supervision, one Doctor of Sciences dissertation and seven Candidate of Sciences dissertations were completed.

Scientific School of Pharmaceutical Analysis and Standardization of Antihypertensive Medicines
Founder

Professor S. N. Vadziuk's Scientific School of Environmental Psychophysiology
Founder

The school was founded by Stepan Nestorovych Vadziuk. Its development is linked to the Department of Normal Physiology, which has operated since 1957 and has been headed by Professor Vadziuk since 1991.
In 1991–2007, his leadership supported the introduction of practice-oriented teaching and modern methods for studying bodily functions. The annual 'Environment and Health' conference and the journal 'Environmental Physiology' were also established.
In March 2013, a Laboratory of Psychophysiological Research was created at the department as an independent research unit. Since 2017, the department has held its current name: the Department of Physiology with the Fundamentals of Bioethics and Biosafety.

L. Ya. Kovalchuk's Ternopil Scientific School of Surgery
Founder

Professor L. Ya. Kovalchuk's scientific school of surgery began to develop in 1987 at the Department of Surgery No. 1. It focused on current challenges in abdominal surgery, particularly the surgical treatment of gastroduodenal disorders. Under Professor Kovalchuk's leadership, the department became one of Ukraine's leading research and clinical centers in surgery, combining scientific investigation, clinical practice and the training of highly qualified surgeons.
Eight Doctors of Medical Sciences and 32 Candidates of Medical Sciences were trained within the school. Its research findings were introduced into healthcare practice, supported the development of modern surgical techniques and helped shape new approaches to the treatment of digestive system diseases.
The school's ideas and traditions continue in the work of Professor Kovalchuk's students, supporting the further development of the Ternopil scientific school of surgery.

Professor T. A. Hroshovyi's Scientific School
Founder

Professor T. A. Hroshovyi's scientific school developed at the Department of Pharmacy Management and Economics with Drug Technology of I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University. It grew out of its founder's many years of research, teaching and professional practice.
On becoming head of the department, Professor Taras Andriiovych Hroshovyi defined strategic priorities that brought together pharmaceutical, technological and economic aspects of drug development, manufacturing and rational use.
Under his leadership, a research environment emerged to improve the composition, technology and quality of medicines and to investigate the economics and management of pharmaceutical practice. This work supported the training of highly qualified specialists and the development of pharmaceutical science and practice.
The ideas and approaches introduced by Professor Hroshovyi continue to develop through the department's work, sustaining its development and contribution to pharmaceutical science in Ukraine.
