The Baltic University Programme announces the BUP PhD Award 2025 This award is a distinction given to the authors of what is judged to be the most qualified PhD work defended at any of the BUP participating universities. The winners will receive a prize in the form of a diploma and support of up to 1000€ for either attending a scientific conference or publishing in a peer-reviewed scientific journal. The BUP PhD Award is a way to support high-quality research promoting sustainable development in a Baltic Sea Region context. For this award, we accept theses defended in 2024 which are nominated by the supervisor/s of the thesis. The award is established in two research areas, one award for each:Natural Sciences, Technology and EngineeringSocial Sciences and HumanitiesA Scientific Committee is responsible for the selection process. The thesis will be assessed from the following criteria: originality, inter-/multi disciplinary approach, novelty, innovation, and how the thesis promotes sustainable development in a Baltic Sea Region context.

The nomination deadline is 25 May 2025.

The Baltic University Programme announces the BUP Symposium 2025 The BUP Symposium is a platform where colleagues at BUP participating universities can disseminate recent research, initiate new discussions, and foster future collaborations. This year, the theme is ‘Strengthening the Security and Resilience of the Baltic Sea Region – Environmental, Political, Social, and Economic Shocks and Crises’. The Symposium will be held on-site in Uppsala, Sweden, between 26-28 November 2025. We will welcome 80 researchers from BUP participating universities, representing various disciplines with an interest in the Baltic Sea Region as an empirical field to discuss the Symposium’s core theme. PhD candidates are invited to apply to attend the BUP PhD Students Training, application opens on 20 March, which will take place in connection with the BUP Symposium.

The Symposium will feature oral presentations organised according to five sessions, each with a focus on the Baltic Sea Region: Climate Change in Times of Environmental and Geopolitical InstabilityEnergy Security and Energy TransitionsInternational Relations: Cooperation and Conflict Civil Society and Preparedness Resilient Food Systems and Water SecurityWe invite you/your research team to submit an abstract of a maximum of 300 words including background and aims, methods, results, and conclusions by 16 May 2025 for consideration. Submit your abstract.
There is no fee to take part in the Symposium in Uppsala since your participation will be covered by The Baltic University Programme. For each abstract accepted the BUP will welcome one presenter, the applicant. Lunches, dinners, and coffee breaks will be provided by the BUP during the event program days. Klaipeda University shares a call for applications to the Scientific conference ‘Social Innovations for Sustainable Regional development’  This event is a platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration and innovative solutions for sustainable regional development. Ivano-Frankivsk National Medical University shares a call for applications to the Scientific conference ‘Development of Best Practices in the Training of Doctors of Philosophy’ This event will be presented in an online format on 30 April 2025. Regional Seminar ‘Today’s Challenges are Tomorrow’s Opportunities: Supporting Cultural Engagement and Student Resiliency During the Education Abroad Experience’ This event is organised jointly by The Forum on Education Abroad, Council of International Education Exchange (CIEE) and Indiana University Global Gateway Center. It takes place in Berlin on 25 April 2025. The event aims to equip attendees with tools and strategies for helping students manage their own expectations for the sake of their learning and well-being.
