Olympiad in Latin Was Held at TNMU

On February 13, 2024, the Department of Foreign Languages of I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University organized the first stage of the All-Ukrainian Student Olympiad in the “Latin Language and Medical Terminology” course. A total of 64 first-year students of the Faculties of Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy participated in this academic event.

Professor Nadiia Fedchyshyn, Associate Professors Halyna Palasiuk, Tetiana Savaryn, Ivanna Vorona, and Yaryna Nakhaieva, who are responsible for the preparation and conduction of the Olympiad, designed the tasks classified by difficulty levels. The innovation of this year’s Olympiad was the implementation of competitive tasks, which included closed-type test tasks, open-ended tasks, and creative tasks that demonstrated knowledge of linguistic and cultural studies. The competition tasks were based on the awareness of the importance of forming the terminological competence of future doctors and determining role of the Latin language as the international language of science.

The following composition of the jury was chosen to evaluate the competitive works: Professor Nadiia Fedchyshyn (chairman of the jury), Associate Professors Halyna Palasiuk, Tetiana Savaryn, Ivanna Vorona, Yaryna Nakhaieva, Roman Kotsiuba.

The results of the Olympiad proved the proper professional level of students’ Latin language training, the high degree of practical skills and abilities development, the good creative potential of future specialists in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and physical therapy.

The winners of the 1st stage were determined in 4 categories depending on the specialty of their prospective degree: 1) Medicine; 2) Dentistry; 3) Pharmacy; Physical Therapy.

In a tense struggle, the best results among students of the Faculty of Medicine (specialty “Medicine”) were shown by:

1st place – B. Yurchenko (MM-111)
2nd place – M. Brona (MM-111), V. Kichula (MM-109), B. Kochkodan (MM-110), O. Hrytsan (MM-231)
3rd place – D. Prokopovych (MM-110), M. Styranka (MM-108), S. Fredyna (MM-118), D. Shovykov (MM-116), D. Paradovsky (MM-112), A. Kopaliov (MM-231).
The best results among students of the Faculty of Medicine (specialty “Physical Therapy”):

1st place – D. Shkrobot (TR-101)
2nd place – Kh. Borysiuk (TR-101)
3rd place – V. Kliuchanskyi (TR-102).
The best results among students of the Faculty of Dentistry:

1st place – M. Kurii (SS-103)
2nd place – B. Poliak (SS-105), D. Yanovych (SS-107)
3rd place – V. Koshman (SS-106), Ye. Petrenko (SS-101), K. Kozitska. (SS-107).
The best results among students of the Faculty of Pharmacy:

1st place – S. Andrukhiv (FF-101)
2nd place – A. V. Nechyporuk (FF-105)
3rd place – Kh. Vozniuk (FF-102), Z. Kurylo (FF-104).

On February 26, 2024, the summing up and announcement of the results of the Olympiad took place in the TNMU library. During the ceremony of awarding the winners, the Head of the Department of Foreign Languages, Professor Nadiia Fedchyshyn and Associate Professor Halyna Palasiuk spoke with welcoming words. All Olympiad participants received awards and commemorative souvenirs.
