TNMU Professor Took Part in the International Congress “Polish and Ukrainian Fight against Tuberculosis – Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow”

On December 4, 2023, the 8th International Congress “Polish and Ukrainian fight against tuberculosis – yesterday, today and tomorrow” was held in Kraków (Republic of Poland), which was attended by Leonid Hryshchuk, Professor of TNMU Department of Propaedeutics of Internal Medicine and Phthisiology.

The event was attended by representatives of international organizations, Polish health care institutions, specialists in epidemic surveillance of infectious diseases, as well as specialists working in the field of tuberculosis control in Poland and Ukraine. During the event, issues related to timely diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis patients among refugees from Ukraine were highlighted.

Reports presenting specific interest included:

– Krzysztof Grzesik, Director of Edmund Wojtyla Lesser Poland Hospital for Pulmonary Diseases and Rehabilitation in Jaroszowiec, “Examples of cooperation between Edmund Wojtyla Lesser Poland Hospital for Pulmonary Diseases and Rehabilitation in Jaroszowiec and the Association for the fight against tuberculosis, mycobacteriosis and lung diseases”.

– Tadeusz M. Zielonka, Professor of Medical University of Warsaw, “Physical and microbiological war”.

– Yurii Valetskyi, Professor of Volyn Medical Institute, “Consequences of the fight against tuberculosis during the war in Ukraine”.

Leonid Hryshchuk delivered a report “Yesterday, today and proposals for cooperation in the eradication of tuberculosis in Europe, Poland and Ukraine”.

Yana Terleieva (Centre for Public Health of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine) presented the report “The history of the fight against tuberculosis in Ukraine – the reasons for the high incidence and a significant number of patients with drug-resistant tuberculosis”. In particular, it was noted that the war unleashed by Russia can affect the achievement of the goals of the WHO Strategy to overcome tuberculosis, the growth of the humanitarian and food crisis, accordingly, all countries, understanding these threats to the whole world, should join forces and strengthen interstate relations in all directions. Aa a part of the national anti-tuberculosis program, the situation and measures to combat tuberculosis in Ukraine in the conditions of a full-scale war were reviewed and the experience of overcoming drug-resistant tuberculosis was discussed. One of the important areas of cooperation between Poland and Ukraine is the exchange of data between our countries regarding people who continue treatment abroad for the continuity of medical care.
