TNMU Student Delivered a Lecture on the Effect of Electronic Cigarettes on Human Body

TNMU student Mariana Kets gave a lecture for tenth-grade students at Ostapiv Secondary School of Skalat UTC (united territorial community) on the topic “Vaping: impact on human health”. The purpose of the event was to acquaint high school students with the effects of electronic cigarette smoking on the human body.

“I decided to give such lectures, because now the problem of using electronic cigarettes by schoolchildren is very urgent, they smoke them at school, on the street and even at home. Children assure their parents that most of their classmates smoke and that it is harmless. I am reporting the real harm of electronic cigarettes. In my lecture, it is indicated which chemicals are contained in a pair of vapes and how they affect the human body,” the student said.

The speaker emphasized the changes in the cardiovascular, respiratory, and nervous systems, in the eyeball, and in the oral cavity when using vapes, in particular:

  • Effect on the cardiovascular system: increased heart rate, increased blood pressure.
  • Impact on the respiratory system: aerosol microparticles can cause asthma, lung inflammation, obstructive bronchitis.
  • Effects on the nervous system: addiction occurs because electronic cigarettes contain nicotine. There are also nicotine-free mixtures, but during smoking there is a release of dopamine – the hormone of happiness, and due to this, it can become addictive.
  • Changes in the eyeball: Smoking can cause a burning sensation that can eventually lead to dry and bloodshot eyes.
  • Changes in the oral cavity: caries can develop due to the large amount of sweet flavorings in e-cigarettes, and exposure to hot aerosol vapors leads to inflammation of the gums (periodontal disease).

After the lecture, a conversation started between the speaker and the students, during which they were able to ask a number of questions and draw certain conclusions about the harmfulness of using electronic cigarettes.
