The Baltic University Programme announces the BUP Mobility Grant 2025 The aim of the grant is to develop and strengthen cooperation among young researchers in the Baltic Sea Region (BSR), at BUP participating universities, by covering travel and accommodation for a research project. The awarded maximum is a total value of 3000 Euros. The grant is intended to support young scholars in their research on sustainable development. For an applicant to be eligible to receive the grant they need to have finished their PhD in the past 5 years.

The application can be made for the funding of new research projects (in whole or in part), or as a contribution to ongoing ones – as long as the applicant stays at another university in the BSR during the Mobility Grant period.

Applicants from all disciplines are welcome to apply. The proposed research project needs to be directly connected to the field of sustainable development (environmental, social and economic) and the Baltic Sea Region.

The applications will be assessed by the BUP Scientific Committee according to the following criteria:Originality: The degree to which the proposed project is pointing to new, original ideas in sustainability; grasping and developing the concept of sustainable development in unique and unexpected directions.A statement of your plan for cooperation with the host university while staying there as a guest researcher, and if relevant, cooperation also with other partners in the Baltic Sea Region.Although inter-disciplinarily is not a strict requirement, projects deemed to have the potential to cross traditional disciplinary boundaries, especially the division line between social and natural science and technology will attract special attention in the evaluation.The project has a focus on common issues in the Baltic Sea Region.The application has to contain an invitation letter from the hosting university as well as a CV, a maximum of two pages, of the applicant. The time period spent at the hosting university is a minimum of one month.

The last application day is 30 April 2025. The suggested project has to be carried out between September 2025 and February 2026.

Södertörn University shares a call for applications to the CBEES Summer School 2025  This summer school critically examines transnational approaches, highlighting their distinction from government-focused international relations and global studies perspectives. It explores the epistemic potential of transnationalism for research on Eastern Europe and the Baltic Sea region. By drawing on broader transnational and decolonial genealogies, and the region’s role in global civil society, the school fosters discussions on the impacts of political, social, economic, cultural, religious, and artistic exchanges involving Eastern Europe. The event takes place on 18-23 August 2025 in Stockholm, Sweden. Key topics of the summer school:Theoretical perspectives on global connectivity and the exchange of people, goods, and ideas in modern history and the present.The circulation of productive, educational, cultural, and scientific expertise, with a focus on Eastern Europe and the Baltic Sea Region’s contributions to transnational exchange.Inter-imperiality, colonialism, and decolonial thought, examining Eastern Europe’s role within these frameworks.Regional perspectives on the global Cold War and anticolonial movements.Global civil society and social movements: transnational participation and activism from EasternEurope and the Baltic Sea Region.Gendered transnationalism in Eastern Europe and the Baltic Sea Region.Transnational approaches to migration and border regimes.Transnational perspectives on the human-nature nexus.By the conclusion of the course, participants will have developed proficiency in applying transnational approaches to analyse the historical and contemporary circulation of ideas, institutions, people, goods, and cultural constructs. The application deadline is 21 March 2025. Read more about the event, such as application details, on the website of Södertörn University.The logo of Södertörn University.

Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra shares a call for applications to the ENVIRO 2025 International Scientific Conference
 The ENVIRO conference has had a long-standing tradition since 1995. Over this time, ENVIRO has provided a platform for a range of interrelated fields in science, research, application, trends, and guidelines, all aimed at actively supporting environmental quality improvement. The conference focuses on identifying tools to restore ecological stability, address the inefficient use of natural resources, and enhance rural landscapes. The conference takes place from 9-10 June 2025 in Nitra, Slovakia.

Key topics include water and soil management, climate change, land consolidation, landscape conservation, landscape architecture, green infrastructure, urban spaces, waste management, and modeling tools for assessing risks from natural and human-made phenomena through geoinformation technologies. It also emphasizes the environmental interdependence of agricultural and horticultural land use.

ENVIRO 2025 is being held as part of the celebrations for the 30th anniversary of the Faculty of Horticulture and Landscape Engineering at the Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra. The deadline to send in an abstract and to register to take part in the event is 31 March 2025.

Björn Carlsons Östersjöpris (Baltic Sea prize)
 Björn Carlsons Östersjöstiftelse – also known as BalticSea2020 – has established an annual prize for researchers or other individuals who have made a valuable contribution to protecting the Baltic Sea’s environment and ecology: Björn Carlsons Östersjöpris. The prize money, initially set at SEK 3 million, was raised to SEK 4 million in 2024 and is awarded annually. Björn Carlsons Östersjöpris is designed to increase interest in the Baltic Sea and inspire commitment to and continuation of existing efforts to ensure a healthier Baltic Sea.
