TNMU Nursing Institute Continues Cooperation with the WHO Country Office in Ukraine to Develop Community Nursing

The Nursing Institute of TNMU continues its cooperation with the World Health Organization (WHO) Country Office in Ukraine to advance nursing and strengthen primary health care. In autumn 2026, this cooperation includes training courses for community nurses based on the WHO Package of Essential Noncommunicable Disease Interventions (WHO PEN) protocols.

The first training course took place on 21–23 September 2026. It was attended by 26 nurses from health care facilities in Volyn Region that provide medical services to local communities.

The training is part of the development of the Community Nurse initiative, which aims to expand nurses’ professional capabilities and strengthen their role in ensuring accessible, high-quality, and continuous health care, particularly in remote settlements. The community nursing development initiative is implemented with the support of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, the Health Care Department of the Volyn Regional State Administration, the World Health Organization, and Volyn Medical Institute.

During the intensive three-day course, participants learned modern approaches to the prevention, early detection, and management of noncommunicable diseases in accordance with WHO PEN protocols. Particular attention was paid to cardiovascular risk assessment, blood pressure management, care for patients with diabetes mellitus, and counselling on lifestyle changes.

The practical component of the training enabled participants to consolidate their theoretical knowledge, practise clinical algorithms, and improve the skills required for their daily professional activities in primary health care.

This training contributes to the development of a modern nursing care model focused on disease prevention, the early identification of risk factors, and an enhanced role for nurses in patient management. It also lays the groundwork for improving access to health care services and strengthening the health care system at the level of territorial communities.

The Nursing Institute continues to implement joint educational initiatives with the WHO Country Office in Ukraine, supporting the professional development of nurses and reinforcing their role as key contributors to the modern health care system.
