Cooperation Between TNMU and WHO in the Field of Palliative Care

On 5–6 October 2026, staff members of the TNMU Nursing Institute, as part of their cooperation with the World Health Organization (WHO), discussed key issues related to the development of palliative care in Ukraine, challenges and prospects in training palliative care professionals, and ways to improve educational programmes. They also visited inpatient palliative and hospice care facilities in Ternopil, including the Palliative Care Unit of the Ternopil Regional Phthisiopulmonology Medical Centre, the Hospice Unit of the Ternopil Regional Clinical Hospital, the Palliative Care Unit of the Ternopil Municipal Emergency Hospital, and the Palliative Care Unit of the Ternopil Regional Children’s Clinical Hospital.

The WHO delegation visiting the palliative care units included Julie Ling, Palliative Care Specialist at the WHO Regional Office for Europe; Polina Huk, Nursing and Midwifery Officer at the WHO Country Office in Ukraine; and Khrystyna Chaika, Human Capital in Health, Education and Medical Science Specialist at the WHO Country Office in Ukraine.

The WHO representatives were accompanied by Stepan Zaporozhan, Vice-Rector for Science, Education and Clinical Affairs and Clinical Affairs at TNMU; Svitlana Danchak, Director of the Nursing Institute; and representatives of the Department of Higher Nursing Education, Patient Care and Clinical Immunology, Associate Professors Nadiia Reha, Olha Zarudna, and Yuliia Kotsaba.

Julie Ling and the WHO Country Office representatives inspected the facilities and arrangements of the palliative care units and spoke with staff members and patients.
