TNMU and Akkon University of Human Sciences (Germany) Carries on Webinars on Fighting COVID-19 and the Responding of Health Care Systems in Ukraine and Around the World

The 2nd German-Ukrainian webinar “Diagnostics and treatment options of COVID-19” was held on January 27, 2021.

The event was supported by TNMU partners: Akkon University of Human Sciences (Berlin) and the Institute for Research in International Assistance (IRIA) (Germany), represented by Professor Timo Ulrichs, Director of the IRIA, Professor of the Akkon University of Human Sciences in Berlin and Ms. Gabi Feldman, Project Coordinator and Research Fellow of the IRIA, Akkon University of Human Sciences, Berlin (Germany); Association of Research Pharmaceutical Companies (Germany), represented by Dr. Siegfried Trom, Director General for Research / Development / Innovation of the VFA and VFA BIO and Mr. Herald Zimmer, the Head of International Relations of the VFA and the Member of the Board of the German Abandoned Tropical Disease Network, and Lviv Regional Centre for Public Health, represented by Ms. Mariana Sluzhynska.

The teachers and students from TNMU were invited: the teachers of the Department of Infectious Diseases with Epidemiology, Dermatology and Venerology, above all Vasyl Kopcha, Professor of the Department, teachers of the Departments of Public Health and Health Management, General Hygiene and Ecology, Functional and Laboratory Diagnostics, Anesthesiology and Intensive Care and other departments, as well as 1st and 2nd year students of the Faculty of Medicine, majoring in public health, post-graduate students of TNMU, students of the Scientific Circle of “Public Health and Social Medicine”. All interested teachers and students also had the opportunity to join the event by filling out the registration form.

The moderator of the 2nd German-Ukrainian webinar “Diagnostics and treatment options of COVID-19″ was Professor Hanna Saturska, the Head of the Department of Public Health and Health Management of TNMU.

Having a huge experience as a WHO expert, Professor Timo Ulrichs, Director of the IRIA, Professor of the Akkon University of Human Sciences (Berlin, Germany), made a report on the topical issues of diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19 and focused on possible ways of their solution, reported on the epidemiological dynamics of the spread of coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, the incidence of new infections, morbidity, mortality, peculiar features of virus tests and mass vaccination in Germany.

Dr. Siegfried Trom, the Director General for Research / Development / Innovation of the VFA (Association of Research Pharmaceutical Companies) and the VFA BIO (Germany) made a report “Race against the Corona pandemic situation (SARS-CoV-2)”; he shared his experience as the head of a trade organization of research pharmaceutical companies in Germany (CEO Research / Development / Innovation vfa (Verband der forschenden Pharma-Unternehmen) & vfa bio). This organization consists of 45 leading pharmaceutical companies that use the results of research organized in the VFA. They guarantee therapeutic progress and provide high-quality pharmaceutical therapy. The VFA member companies represent more than two thirds of the entire German pharmaceutical market. The VFA represents the German high-tech industry competitive in the international market. Dr. Siegfried Trom presented a detailed review of the types and stages of vaccine and drug development and was very optimistic on the fact that, despite the progress of the COVID-19 pandemic, development of vaccines and effective drugs for treatment of COVID-19 by pharmaceutical companies is significant.

Vasyl Kopcha, Professor of the Department of Infectious Diseases with Epidemiology, Dermatology and Venerology of TNMU, reported on “Treatment of patients with COVID-19 through the prism of the disease pathogenesis” with detailed main pathogenic aspects of COVID-19 development. He noted that development of SARS from alveolar oedema to diffuse alveolar damage does not depend on the intensity of replication of the virus and its high titres, demonstrated pathomorphological features of body organs: lungs, kidneys, spleen, in cases of COVID-19, emphasized the significance of cytokine storm and the peculiarities of the blood coagulation system in this disease. Vasyl Kopcha shared his significant experience of treating patients with COVID-19 and suggested shifting the emphasis in treatment from etiotropic to pathogenetic therapy.

The participants asked questions to the speakers and joined the discussions on diagnosis and treatment of patients with COVID-19 as well as vaccination of the population.

Ukrainian-English and English-Ukrainian interpretation of the webinar was provided by TNMU experts: Yurii Petrashyk, Anastasia Bohutska, Diana Collins, Taras Kadobnyi and Hanna Saturska.
