Festival of Medical Specialties at TNMU
On October 10, 2024, the Ternopil National Medical University hosted the Festival of Medical Specialties, organized by the Communications and Marketing Department and the university’s admissions committee. Faculty deans, deputies, and the Student Parliament of TNMU, particularly Anhelina Lototska, actively participated in the event.






The festival guests were schoolchildren from Ternopil.
Methods of Preserving Mental Health
The Medical Specialties Festival coincided with World Mental Health Day, so Marianna Koval, Assistant Professor of the Psychiatry, Narcology and Medical Psychology Department, together with the first-year interns – Olha Shapovalova, Svitlana Suvalko, Marta Kutsobina, Bohdan Avdeev, Daria Oreshchenko, Ivan Klymash, Vladyslav Matveev – prepared exercises to improve the psycho-emotional state for academic staff, students of TNMU and guests of the festival.

First of all, all those present identified their subconscious fears, emotions, and moods with the help of metaphorical associative maps and received consultations from the Department representatives.
Also, representatives of the Department studied how TNMU teachers cope with stress.
Mini Study Room on Histology and Embryology
Assistants of the Histology and Embryology Department Violetta Kulbitska and Nataliya Ohinska together with second-year students (MM-213) of the Faculty of Medicine Stanislav Kozytskyi and Serhiy Pashchuk familiarized everyone with the subject and tasks of the fundamental morphological discipline “Histology, Cytology and Embryology”. The students had the opportunity to learn more about light-optical microscopes and tried to examine a histological preparation. Instructors and students discussed the methods of making histological preparations and types of microscopic studies.

The academic staff of the Histology and Embryology Department and students used a large amount of visual educational material: electronograms, photomicrographs of light microscopy, and high-quality histological preparations, which revived the interest of girls and boys in histology.
Diagnostic Tests to Check the Respiratory System
Students Yaroslav Bilyk (MM-406) and Yuriy Bakalets (MM-103), who are members of the student scientific group of the Functional and Laboratory Diagnostics Department and Medical Biology Department, together with the Associate Professor of the Functional and Laboratory Diagnostics Department Olena Bakalets, offered schoolchildren and teachers to undergo rapid diagnostic tests that make it possible to check the functional state of the respiratory system. The guests of the event could determine the maximum speed of exhalation with the help of Peak Flow, and with the help of pulse oximetry, they defined the saturation of arterial blood hemoglobin with oxygen (SpO2) and pulse frequency.


At the same time, the students demonstrated to the visitors of the location the effects of smoking and vaping on the respiratory system.
Section of Medical Parasitology
Students Zahariy Boyko (MM-204) and Pavlo Hura (MM-204), as members of the student scientific group of the Medical Biology Department, with the support of the Head of this Department – Professor Larysa Fedonyuk, presented two sections at the Festival: “Medical Parasitology,” and “Poisonous Animals.” It should be noted that schoolchildren were interested in those topics. They learned basics about the dangers of contact with poisonous animals and parasites.

The medical parasitology section dealt with trichinellosis, leptospirosis, paragonimosis, and opisthorchosis and was devoted to diseases caused by parasites. The schoolchildren were most interested in macro preparations with representatives of intermediate and final hosts in the parasite development cycle. Students explained in detail the means of prevention of those diseases.

In the section with poisonous animals, the top 10 most dangerous poisonous creatures found in our climate were presented. Among them were snakes, centipedes, scorpions, and others. Scorpions and snakes were of particular interest. The students explained to the participants of the event the main stages of providing first aid in the event of a bite by various animals.
Basic Examinations of the Health State and the Basics of Hygiene and Ecology
The instructors of the General Hygiene and Ecology Department, Professor Olena Lototska and Associate Professor Olha Sopel, together with the students of the MM-319 group, familiarized the schoolchildren with the concept of acceptable sanitary and epidemiological norms and demonstrated the operation of the equipment used to measure the relevant indicators. In particular, the guests learned to determine nitrate amounts in food products. They set the level of ultraviolet light, natural light, radiant temperature, air movement speed, and general water mineralization.

Under the leadership of the Associate Professor of the Internal Medicine No. 1 Department, Lyudmyla Naumova, the senior students measured the blood sugar levels and talked about the peculiarities of the diet in case of increased or decreased indicators.

Physical Therapy is a Specialty that Improves the Life Quality
The specialty “Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy,” “Therapy and Rehabilitation” at the Festival of Medical Specialties was presented by the Head of the Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Physical Education Department – Professor Dariia Popovych, Assistants Anastasiia Bai, Ulyana Hevko, and Andriy Havrylenko, Associate Professor Viktor Nazaruk.





The event participants had the opportunity not only to get professional information about the relevance of the profession of a physical therapist but also to practice with the rehabilitation equipment and pass a certain functional examination.

Everyone understands the importance of a physical therapist, especially now, and why these specialists are needed by our military, as well as people with special needs. Physical therapists restore the joy of movement and improve the quality of life.

Pharmaceutical Experiments, Drug Technology, and Other Curiosities
During the festival, the academic staff of the Pharmaceutical Faculty worked as a friendly team under the leadership of the Dean – Associate Professor Dmytro Korobko. Visitors to pharmaceutical locations were offered interesting practical works from a number of specialized disciplines: Pharmaceutical Botany, Pharmacognosy, Phytotherapy, Drug Technology, Analytical and Pharmaceutical Chemistry.

Visitors were interested in the possibility of organoleptic analysis of essential oils (lemon, mint, eucalyptus, fir, etc.).


Visitors had the opportunity to prepare a cosmetic gel for hair styling and give it good consumer characteristics by flavoring and tinting it with various dyes.


Dental Care, Fillings, and Making Casts of the Oral Cavity
The academic staff of the Faculty of Dentistry, led by the Dean – Associate Professor Svitlana Boytsanyuk, worked actively. The lecturers of the Therapeutic Dentistry Department, Associate Professors Marta Zaliznyak and Maryana Levkiv, spoke about their studies at the Dental Faculty, demonstrated the methods of filling carious cavities, and taught the rules of oral care. The lecturers of the Orthopedic Dentistry Department, Associate Professors Orysya Bandrivska, Olha Stakhanska, Tetyana Dzetsyukh, and Svitlana Rosolovska, showed future students how to take anatomical impressions of teeth with alginate material. Vasyl Krupey, an Assistant at the Children’s Dentistry Department, taught schoolchildren about proper oral hygiene. Students of 305, 415, and 516 academic groups actively worked with the Faculty of Dentistry lecturers.



Nursing as an Independent and Important Element in Medicine
The Educational and Scientific Institute of Nursing was represented at the Festival by its Director – Associate Professor Svitlana Danchak; Deputy Director for educational work – Assistant Vita Slavopas; Assistants of the Higher Nursing Education, Patient Care and Clinical Immunology Department, Iryna Yavorska and Oksana Prokopchuk. Second-year students (Mbv-242) Kateryna Sapyla, Anna Melymuka, Mariia Andrushkiv, and Marianna Maryniak joined the popularization of the nursing profession.




Future nurses and their mentors measured the height and weight and determined the body mass index. They also demonstrated the technique of setting up an intravenous catheter and taking blood from a vein on a phantom using a vacutainer. Students willingly demonstrated finding veins using a peripheral vein visualizer for venipuncture.
Those Who Save Lives First
Students of the PBv-231 group, under the guidance of the Assistant of the Emergency and Simulation Medicine Department, Alina Tomkiv, conducted master classes on providing pre-medical care. Nadiya Stelmakh, Denys Odanchuk, Ivan Kolehin, Rostyslav Katrychuk, Andriy Abramov, Arina Pysanko, Mariia Boyko, Sofiia Shkalat and Valeriia Dibrivka demonstrated the skills that are of primary importance during the most common life-threatening conditions.


The future paramedics familiarized Ternopil schoolchildren with the following skills:
- • ensuring patency of the respiratory tract by manual methods and with the help of special devices;
- • correct tracheal intubation technique;
- • methods of quick stopping of critical bleeding;
- • basic resuscitation using an automatic external defibrillator (AED).
