Medical Communication Courses: Training the Trainers at TNMU

The Center for the Advancement of Pedagogical and Professional Excellence at I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University organized and conducted a 30-hour training course for faculty members. The event brought together over 50 educators from both theoretical and clinical departments.

Course Objectives

The primary goal of the course was to enhance the pedagogical skills of TNMU faculty by improving their professional communication competence and equipping them with innovative, student-centered teaching methodologies.

During both in-person and online sessions, participants explored key techniques for:
✅ Providing effective feedback
✅ Using the E-B-E (E-V-E) protocol
✅ Applying the N.U.R.S.E mnemonic to express empathy
✅ Delivering bad news using the SPIKES protocol

Key Learning Outcomes

The training program focused on:

• Developing a student-centered approach in medical education
• Implementing a patient-centered approach in clinical practice
• Building trust in professional relationships
• Understanding personal boundaries and subjectivity
• Identifying and overcoming communication barriers
• Recognizing the importance of empathy in medical interactions

These courses provided valuable insights and practical skills, ensuring TNMU educators are well-equipped to create a supportive and engaging learning environment for their students while fostering high-quality communication in medical practice.
