Project “Psychophysiological Aspects of Puberty in Children with Intellectual Disabilities”

On May 28, 2025, a parental project titled “Psychophysiological Aspects of Puberty in Children with Intellectual Disabilities” was held at the Ternopil Special Secondary School. The meeting was organized by Yuliia Venher, a psychologist at the Ternopil National Medical University Mental Health Center, within the framework of the national mental health and psychosocial support program “How are you?” initiated by Ukraine’s First Lady Olena Zelenska.

This important and sensitive discussion brought together parents who face daily challenges in supporting their children through the complex process of growing up.

Puberty is a challenging stage in every child’s life, but for children with intellectual disabilities, it requires special attention, understanding, and support.

During the meeting, participants discussed:

Physical and psycho-emotional changes during adolescence;

How to explain what is happening to the child in an accessible and appropriate way;

The development of personal boundaries and protective behaviors;

Prevention of risky behaviors;

Ways in which parents can become a stable source of support during times of change.

The project created a safe space for parents to ask questions, share their concerns, and receive professional guidance and support.

We sincerely thank all participants for their trust, openness, and willingness to grow alongside their children.
Caring for mental health begins with awareness and honest family dialogue.
