At the Department of Physiology with Bioethics and Biosafety, the event “Cherkasy: Challenges of History and the Present”.

An ecological and local history event dedicated to the Cherkasy region was held at the Department of Physiology with Bioethics — a land that nurtured Taras Shevchenko and Bohdan Khmelnytskyi. The families of Mykhailo Hrushevskyi, Pavlo Skoropadskyi, Vyacheslav Chornovil, and many other prominent figures in the history of Ukraine also originate from this region.

The first presentation was prepared by Maksym Petukhov (MM-233), a native of Cherkasy.

Cherkasy is a city with deep historical roots and at the same time a modern cultural center of Ukraine. It was founded in the mid-14th century as a fortress to protect the southern borders. Later the city became an important center of trade and crafts, and in the 15th–17th centuries it played a significant role in Cossack history and in the liberation struggle of the Ukrainian people. The official founding year of Cherkasy is considered to be 1286.

The report “The Brave City of Smila” was prepared by Yaroslav Ozeryanskyi (MM-220).

Smila is a city with deep historical roots and a distinctive character. According to legend, it received its name in honor of a brave girl who saved the Cossacks by guiding them through the swamps — a story that still symbolizes the courage and resilience of the local residents.

The report by Vlada Brovko (MM-220) was dedicated to the Uman region.

Today it is an area with a population of about 80,000 residents in the community, where features of urban life combine with the traditions of surrounding villages. Uman is the administrative and cultural center of the region and an important educational hub. The city has developed food, medical, and construction industries and is also a significant tourist center thanks to its historical and architectural heritage and the Sofiyivka Dendrological Park.

As noted by the Head of the Department of Physiology with Bioethics, Professor Stepan Vadzyuk, “It is worth mentioning the Symyrenko family — well-known Ukrainian industrialists and philanthropists who originated from the Cherkasy region. The most famous representatives were Platon and Levko Symyrenko, founders of a powerful sugar production industry and active figures of the Ukrainian national movement. They supported the development of culture, education, and science, financed the publication of Ukrainian books, and supported the work of Taras Shevchenko. The Symyrenko family became a symbol of the combination of entrepreneurship, philanthropy, and patriotism in the history of the region.”
