On November 11, 2021, a meeting with Anastasшia Leukhina the author of “Not a terrible book about life, death and everything in between”, the best book of 2020 KBU awards, was held in the reading room of the library of I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University.

Almost every family once faces a serious illness, incurable diagnosis or intensive care. “Not a terrible book at all” is about life after such news. It consists of tips and real-life stories and shows how it is and how to deal with it.

The book tells how to survive after bad news, how to communicate with a sick person, how to organize care at home and what to do if death occurs at home or in intensive care, how to anesthetize, how to help children survive illness or death of a loved one, how to take care of yourself when close people are sick.

Anastasiia Leukhina is a teacher at Kyiv School of Economics, an independent facilitator, a trainer of the Ukrainian-Swiss project “Development of Medical Education”, a co-founder of the NGO “Horyzontali”.

Based on the presented book, as well as many years of experience of doctors, teachers of medical universities want to introduce a new course “Humanity and empathy in the work of the doctor” for students of TNMU.

“In the present society, the good is truly in demand, especially for the medical profession. Humanity, empathy, sympathy and compassion must be present in the relationship with patients. A person-centred approach is a new philosophy that promotes respects and empathy for people receiving medical care taking into account social factors that affect health. At the same time, it is important for healthy interaction between the health worker and the patient, which makes them partners in overcoming the challenges associated with the disease”, said Iryna Borovyk, Associate Professor of the Department of Primary Health Care and General Practice of Family Medicine of TNMU.

Students, teachers and caring residents of the city visited the library to get acquainted with the book.

After the presentation, the author presented the books to the patients of Ternopil Regional Hospital “Hospice” of Ternopil Regional Council and the library of TNMU.
