Basic Emergency Care Course Was Completed at TNMU

On February 26 – March 1, 2024, the “Basic emergency care” course was held at the Centre for Medical Simulation of Ternopil National Medical University. This educational and practical program was created by three organizations – the World Health Organization, the International Federation of Emergency Medicine, and the International Red Cross Society. Thanks to the efforts of these organizations, the course was registered and conducted in more than 50 countries.

Its main purpose is training the instructors. The course was held for the first time on the territory of Ukraine. It was organized simultaneously at Ternopil National Medical University and at one of the institutions of higher education in Lviv. In our university, 12 teachers specialising in nursing or emergency medical care from O. Bohomolets National Medical University, Odesa National Medical University, Zhytomyr Medical Institute, Chernivtsi Medical College, TNMU Academic and Research Institute of Nursing and Department of Emergency and Simulation Medicine of TNMU were invited to participate.

Two instructors – Halyna Tsymbaliuk and Artem Kovaliov, as well as master trainer (course director) Thomas Will (Germany) shared their knowledge and experience.

During five days, the participants had the opportunity to master basic emergency medical care skills, listened to lectures, participated in seminars, analysed clinical scenarios. At the end of the course, there was a theoretical and practical exam. The participants who successfully passed these exams continued their studies at the TfT (“Teachers for Teachers”) course on March 4-5, 2024.

In total, eight participants successfully completed the course and passed the exams as potential instructors, including two representatives of our university, Yuliia Danylevych and Roman Huk. Later, they will all complete two more internships each and become instructors of the “Basic Emergency Care” course. They will implement it in the emergency medical care system.

Since basic emergency care skills are studied and polished during the course, it is designed for the pre-hospital or early hospital stage. It is suitable for family doctors and other primary care specialists. Also, great emphasis will be placed on the training of nurses of the admission department or doctors who are on duty in the admission departments and emergency medical care departments.
