TNMU Department of Physical Therapy, Ergotherapy and Physical Education Assistant completed professional internship in Warsaw
On November 18-29, 2019, Assistant of the Department of Physical Therapy, Ergotherapy and Physical Education Anastasiia Bai completed professional internship in the Department of Ergotherapy of the Faculty of Rehabilitation within the framework of the agreement on cooperation between I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University and J. Pilsudski Academy of Physical Education in Warsaw (AWF).

During the internship, A. V. Bai got acquainted with the principles of organization of the rehabilitation process in the clinical facilities of J. Pilsudski Academy of Physical Education, in particular, in the Olinek Intensive Therapy Centre and the Ośrodek Wczesnej Interwencji Polskiego Stowarzyszenia na rzecz Osób z Nśpełnospraw (Early Intervention Center of the Polish Association for People with Disabilities). A. V. Bai familiarized with the concept of conducting ergotherapy workshops with a view of implementation of valuable experience in Ukraine, as well as further cooperation in the field of rehabilitation.

In Ukraine, ergotherapy has recently been introduced into the occupational classifier, that is why much attention has been given to this specility.
Ergotherapy refers to modern methods of rehabilitation, which combine not only physical recovery, but also the restoration of the patient’s psychological condition. The main peculiarity of an ergotherapist is that they not only explain to a person in a post-traumatic condition or with a disability to to cope with everyday difficulties and restore self-care skills, but also teach how to deal with the problem psychologically, enjoy life, have fun and even have active leisure.

At the Olinek Intensive Therapy Centre, ergotherapists work with children with autism spectrum disorders, disorders of the musculoskeletal system, after traumas, with a number of mental disorders, characterized by a disorder of acquired functions, skills and abilities in chronic illnesses, which gave an opportunity to work with patients with different nosologies.

At Ośrodek Wczesnej Interwencji Polskiego Stowarzyszenia na rzecz Osób z Niepełnosprawnością Intellectualną, ergotherapists work with children with autism spectrum disorders and congenital pathologies from birth to 7 years of age, aiming to adapt their patients to education.

During this professional internship A. V. Bai improved her language skills; gained experience in the international scientific environment; took practical experience in ergotherapy for the development of educational and methodological documentation; became familiar with a comprehensive approach to rehabilitation; learned about the scientific and practical achievements of the staff of the Olinek and Ośrodek Wczesnej Interwencji Polskiego Stowarzyszenia na rzecz Osób z Niepełnosprawnością Intellectualną Centres on the development of individual rehabilitation programs for children with different nosologies; improved knowledge and practical skills in designing rehabilitation programs for different age groups of patients; became familiar with a comprehensive approach to rehabilitation; learned how to use modern rehabilitation equipment for diagnosis and work with patients.

The experience gained by A. V. Bai during her professional internship is planned to be introduced into the educational process of I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University.
