TNMU staff diagnose coronavirus infection in patients using PCR testing
The representatives of I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University staff, Assistant of the Department of Microbiology, Virology and Immunology Uliana Ilnytska and postgraduate student of the Department of Pathological Physiology Olha Kostiuk are also fighting epidemic in Ukraine. They investigate the presence of coronavirus infection in patients using the polymerase-chain reaction method. Both are also virologists at the Virology Laboratory of the Department of Biological Factors Research of the State Institution “Ternopil Regional Laboratory Centre of the State Sanitary and Epidemiological Service of Ukraine”.
There are two types of COVID-19 diagnostic tests in Ukraine: PCR-based test systems that directly detect the presence of the virus in the body, and rapid tests that detect the presence of antibodies to the virus. The former are used only in specialized laboratories. The material is taken from the throat or nose. Express tests can be done by any hospital. To do this, capillary or venous blood samples are taken.
The workload of TNMU representatives is extremely intense. They work without days off and almost without rest.
