TNMU Employees are Tested for Free on the Presence of IgM and IgG Antibodies to the COVID-19Pathogen
As part of the RECOOP RCSS Grant No.25 Senior Scientists Grant 2020-2021 grant project by the RECOOP Association “Cross-Humoral Immunity Study between Coronaviruses Causing Seasonal Colds and SARS-CoV-2”, free examinations of the university staff are conducted at TNMU for IgM and IgG antibodies to the COVID-19 pathogen. Research is carried out in partnership with international experts.
Today, it is established by the statistics published that the highest mortality rates from COVID-19 are in Europe and North America. At the same time, in Asia, where the pandemic actually began, the mortality rates are much lower. This may be assumed that the populations of these countries have already acquired immunity to SARS-CoV-2, because before the current pandemic, the citizens of these countries suffered multiple outbreaks of coronavirus infections.
Another interesting fact is that in children, coronavirus infections are much more common than in adults. This may also explain the fact that in adults both the susceptibility to COVID-19 and the severity of the disease caused by this virus are much higher than in children. The reason for this may be the existence of acquired immunity in children due to multiple coronavirus infections they suffered from before.
Certain types of coronaviruses (mainly OC43, 229E, NL63, HKU1), which cause seasonal colds, circulate annually on the territory of Ukraine. It can be assumed that individuals who have previously “frequently” encountered these coronaviruses may have at least partial immunity to SARS-CoV-2.
Almost 300 employees have already been testet in TNMU. The results of the tests prove that almost 6% of them have IgG antibodies to SARS-CoV-2, but did not have any clinical signs of COVID-19. This may evidence that these workers have got acquired immunity to COVID-19 due to previous coronavirus infections caused by coronaviruses that cause seasonal illnesses. In the future it is planned to study this category of people for the presence of antibodies to OC43, 229E, NL63, HKU1 viruses.
