TNMU Researchers took part in the Hellenic Symposium on Medical Chemistry
On February 25-27, 2021, the 18th Hellenic Symposium on Medicinal Chemistry was held. The event was organized by the Hellenic Society of Medicinal Chemistry supported by the European Federation for Medicinal Chemistry and Medical Biology. The symposium is held annually for 35 years in Greece and is an important event for the world scientific community.
The program of the 18th Hellenic Symposium on Medicinal Chemistry was divided into 10 sections: “At the boundary between medicinal chemistry and chemical biology” (head of the section – Prof. Mikros Emmanuel); “Novel targeted approaches for well-described pathologies” (head of the section – Prof. Nikolaou Ioannis); “Structure and simulations as catalysts for accelerated drug discovery” (head of the section – Prof. Fousteris Manolis); “A medicinal chemist glimpse in the arsenal of nature” (head of the section – Prof. Zoidis Grigoris); “Novel targeted approaches for well-described pathologies II” (head of the section – Prof. Papanastasiou Ioannis); “The virtual toolkit of medicinal chemistry” (head of the section – Prof. Tsantili Anna); “Trends and advances in bioinorganics” (head of the section – Prof. Myrianthopoulos Vasilios); “Nanotechnology and biophysics enabling development of novel therapeutics” (head of the section – Prof. Dotsikas Ioannis); “Pharmaceutical Analysis “Old bariers new leaps”. The multifaceted role of pharmaceutical analysis in the new science” (head of the section – Prof. Gikas Evangelos); “COVID apocalypse. The day after” (head of the section – Dr Calogeropoulou Theodora).
The symposium started with a welcome speech by Professor Emmanuel Mikros, the Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the 18th Hellenic Symposium on Medicinal Chemistry, Professor of the Capodistria National University of Athens, the President of the Hellenic Society of Medical Chemistry.

The speakers from around the world were invited for this event: Greece, Germany, Britain, France, Italy, Spain, Cyprus, Sweden, Switzerland, Norway, Denmark, Poland, the Netherlands, Finland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia, Belarus, Turkey, India, China, the USA, Canada, and Ukraine. Only I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University represented Ukraine. Professor of the department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, the University of Athens (Greece), Anna Tsantili invited the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and the Department of Pharmacognosy and Medical Botany of TNMU to take part in the 18th Hellenic Symposium on Medicinal Chemistry, because of a long-lasting cooperation
Aliona Savych, a doctoral student of the Department of Pharmacognosy and Medical Botany represented I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University at the 18th Hellenic Symposium on Medicinal Chemistry. She presented a report on “Phytochemical and pharmacological research of new plant mixtures for treatment and prevention of type 2 diabetes mellitus, establishment of correlation between phytochemical composition and their pharmacodynamics” (section A, medicinal chemist glimpse in the arsenal of nature, Section President Prof. Zoidis Grigoris), on phytochemical and pharmacological studies of herbal antidiabetic herbal medicinal products and correlations between biologically active substances and their pharmacodynamics. The results of the research are part of Aliona Savych’s doctoral thesis, Professor Svitlana Marchyshyn, the Head of the Department of Pharmacognosy and Medical Botany, an academic advisor.

The post-graduate student Olha Skrynchuk and Lyudmila Slobodianiuk, the Assistant Professor of the Department of Pharmacognosy and Medical Botany, presented the results of research on “Determination of carboxylic acids of Crambe cordifolia and Crambe koktebelica roots” (academic advisor – Professor Svitlana Marchyshyn), as well as the post-graduate student Lilia Kostyshyn and Lilia Budniak, the Assistant Professor of the Department of Pharmacy Management, Economics and Technology, – on “Determination of amino acids content in Saponaria officinalis L.” (academic advisor – Professor Svitlana Marchyshyn), as well as the PhD student, Kateryna Peleshok, the Assistant Professor of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, – on “HPLC method development for valsartan and atenolol in dosage forms on column Zorbax C8” (academic advisor – Professor Lilia Lohoida) and Natalia Shuliak, a post-graduate student of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, – on “Novel HPLC method for quantification of atorvastatin and its impurities in tablets on different chromatographic columns” (academic advisor – Professor Lilia Lohoida).

The program of the 18th Hellenic Symposium on Medicinal Chemistry on February 25-27 was full of interesting reports and poster presentations that caused active scientific discussions by the symposium participants.

Professor Hadjipavlou-Litina Dimitra (Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Aristotle University, Greece, Hirsha Index – 49) has been cooperating with TNMU for many years and has developed joint publications with the researchers of the Department of Pharmacy. Lilia Lohoida, the Head of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry provided lectures on pharmaceutical chemistry under the program “Erasmus+ teaching” at the University of Aristotle (Thessaloniki, Greece) in 2017.
The researchers of the Departments of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmacognosy and Medical Botany appreciate the invitation by the organizers of the 18th Hellenic Symposium on Medicinal Chemistry and Professor Anna Tsantili and the opportunity to join the international symposium and improve research skills. The TNMU experts received participation certificates in the symposium.
