On May 12, 2023, a global health symposium dedicated to the 5th anniversary of the Institute for Research in International Assistance (IRIA) “Shaping the Future of the Health System” was held at the Akkon University of Human Sciences (Berlin, Germany).

5 Years IRIA – Symposium on Global Health “Shaping the Future of the Health System”

The Rector of TNMU, Professor Mykhaylo Korda, took part in the symposium in an online format, and he conveyed sincere congratulations to our partners. Professor Hanna Saturska reported on the challenges of war “Overview of the responses of the Ukrainian public health system to the challenges posed by the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine.” Professor Oksana Shevchuk joined the event with the report dedicated to the joint project on podcasts.

IRIA is headed by our reliable partner and good friend of Ukraine – Professor Timo Ulrichs (Prof. Dr. med. Dr. PH), who simultaneously heads the Department of International Assistance in Emergency and Disaster Situations and Global Health. IRIA project coordinator is Dr. Gaby Feldmann. Ternopil National Medical University has been cooperating with Akkon University of Social Sciences for more than five years.
IRIA focuses on critically important development and humanitarian aid and health research issues such as:

  • Restructuring of global health care to achieve the goals of sustainable development
  • Civil-military cooperation in humanitarian aid and development aid
  • Global health security/Diplomacy
  • Health care systems in transition, in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa
  • One Health/Planetary Health
  • Fighting against infectious diseases
  • Education and training for local self-government bodies

During this time, a series of German-Ukrainian webinars was organized and held, dedicated to the issues of fighting COVID-19 and the response of health care systems in Ukraine and the world to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic; four scientific joint symposia with international participation, dedicated to public health issues in the social and educational space and challenges in the globalization of society.

According to the curriculum developed jointly with the specialists of Akkon University under the chairmanship of professors Timo Ulrichs and Gaby Feldman and with their active participation by delivering lectures at Ternopil National University, the training of masters in the field of public health is carried out (issues of disease prevention, health promotion and continuation life expectancy, health care management, epidemiology). In 2021, the first Master’s degree in “Public Health” was awarded.
Together with IRIA, the manual “Public Health in Ukraine” was published in the “Akkon Schriftenreihe” series.
Our latest joint project with IRIA and Akkon University is Akkon podcasts for Ukraine (Podcast Project for CME – Continuing Medical Education). This project is aimed at supporting continuous medical education of health care workers in Ukraine during the war.
Our partners regularly send humanitarian goods to the Volunteer Centre of TNMU. Thanks to the support of Timo and Gabi, our students and teachers have full access to the Lecturio medical education platform, including the TNMU Lecturio mobile apps for iOS and Android.
