Changes to the Academic Program “Practical Training in Medical Simulation” Were Made for the 6th-Year Students of the Faculty of Medicine
In academic year 2023-2024, Ternopil National Medical University made changes to the academic program “Practical Training in Medical Simulation” for the 6th-year students of the Faculty of Medicine, in particular to its assessment part. Instead of testing, students were asked to demonstrate acquired practical skills and work in scenarios while providing medical care to an emergency patient. 4 locations were deployed on the basis of the Simulation Training Centre:
- Stop the bleed,
- BLS+PBLS,
- Management of a critical adult patient,
- Advanced resuscitation measures in adults.
Each location (scenarios, algorithms and checklists) was developed by teachers of the Department of Emergency and Simulation Medicine who are instructors of the All-Ukrainian and European Resuscitation Council.

The first attempt of such a final test took place on September 23, 2023. In addition to the teachers, 3rd-year paramedic students also worked at the locations, supplementing the team that either examined the patient or carried out resuscitation measures. It is clear that a sixth-year student in this situation became the leader of such a team. Therefore, their communication and leadership qualities were additionally evaluated.
An additional incentive for students was the opportunity to receive certificates from the All-Ukrainian Council of Resuscitation and Emergency Medical Care for high knowledge and skilful performance of practical tasks. We hope that these certificates will significantly complement their portfolio during further professional development.

In particular, sixth-year students Vladyslav Daneliuk, Dariia Maika and Yana Chaika received “BLS” certificates, Roman Dzodzyk – “BLS”, “Stop the bleed”, “Management of a critical patient” and “Advanced resuscitation measures in adults” certificates, Roman Halan and Roksolana Yasynska – “Stop the bleed” certificates, Anatolii Pelikhovskyi received “BLS”, “Management of the critical patient” and “Advanced resuscitation measures for adults” certificates.
