Festive Meeting of TNMU Academic Board on the Occasion of the 170th Anniversary of Ivan Horbachevsky
The festive meeting of the Academic Board of Ternopil National Medical University on the occasion of the 170th anniversary of Ivan Horbachevsky took place in the family residence of the Horbachevsky in the village of Zarubyntsi, Zbarazh district. It was here that on May 15, 1854, Ivan Horbachevsky was born in the family of a priest of the Greek Catholic Church. He became a doctor of medical sciences, professor, dean of the medical faculty and rector of Charles University in Prague, the first minister of public health of Austria-Hungary, rector of the Ukrainian Free University, an active member of Taras Shevchenko Scientific Society, a nominee for the Nobel Prize. Throughout his life, Ivan Horbachevsky was a devoted patriot of Ukraine.

The event began with the Liturgy and blessing of Metropolitan Nestor of Ternopil and Kremenets, chaplain of TNMU Ihor Drapak, parish priest of the Church of St. John the Theologian Ivan Lesyk, administrator of the Church of the Holy Ascension Father Oleksii.

The Rector of TNMU, Professor Mykhaylo Korda, gave a welcome speech speaking about the achievements of Ivan Horbachevsky and his contribution to the development of world science.

Viktor Ustenko, the Deputy Head of the Ternopil Regional Military Administration, noted that everyone gathered here to commemorate Ivan Horbachevsky. Viktor Ustenko noted that Ivan Horbachevsky did a lot for the development of Ukrainian science and is an extraordinary figure in Ukrainian history. Having spent his entire life abroad, Horbachevsky always remained loyal to Ukraine.

Roman Polikrovskyi, the mayor of Zbarazh, congratulated all those present and in his welcoming speech also drew attention to the figure of Ivan Horbachevsky.

The event was also attended by Deputy Mayor of Zbarazh Volodymyr Bohaichuk, forester of Zbarazh Forestry Vasyl Malanchuk, community headman of Novyky village Ihor Mnykh, benefactor of Zarubyntsi village Oksana Fedchyshyn. All of them put a lot of effort into the beautification of the manor.
On the occasion of Ivan Horbachevsky’s 170th birthday, Ternopil National Medical University launched a new award – “Honoured University Professor – Laureate of Ivan Horbachevsky Medal”.

As Mykhaylo Korda noted, every year the Academic Board will choose one honoured professor at the university, who will receive this award and have an honorary title. Academician Mykhaylo Andreychyn became the first owner of such an award. During the celebrations, the Rector of TNMU presented Mykhaylo Andreychyn with the diploma of “Honoured University Professor” and the Ivan Horbachevsky Medal.



“I have always tried to work conscientiously and to perform high-quality work, to produce high-quality scientific products. I managed to train almost 60 doctors and candidates of medical sciences, 9 of whom are the heads of departments in various universities of Ukraine. I believe that this award also belongs to my followers in science, representatives of the department,” Mykhaylo Andreychyn said during the presentation.


On the same day, the Rector of TNMU Mykhaylo Korda also presented awards to the winners of the Ivan Horbachevsky Scientific Paper Competition.














In addition, Mykhaylo Korda presented the diplomas of associate professors to Volodymyr Bukata, Natalia Volotovska, Tetiana Husieva, Bohdan Koshak, Svitlana Kucher, Sofia Maslii, Marianna Mysula, Oksana Mochulska, Nadia Oliinyk, Andrii Prodan, Natalia Sydliaruk, Zoriana Smahlii, Maksym Franchuk, Roman Shmata, Lilia Hrytsyshyn.

The event was decorated with songs performed by pupils of Patriarch Josyf Slipyj Higher Theological Seminary, who sang the song compositions “Do You Hear, My Brother (“The Cranes”)”, “Prayer for Ukraine (“Lord, oh the Great and Almighty”)”.
