TNMU Increases the Number of Partners to Develop the Specialty “Prosthetics-Orthotics.”

On September 5, 2024, OeAD project manager Diana Popfalushi, Special Attaché for Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection of the Austrian Embassy in Ukraine Martin Mühlbacher, and Professor of Prosthetics of the University for Applied Sciences Upper Austria Hubert Egger visited Ternopil National Medical University.

At the meeting, the Rector of TNMU, Mykhailo Korda, provided comprehensive information about the activities and achievements of our university, as well as about the initiation and development of the new specialty “Prosthetics-Orthotics.”

The Rector emphasized that due to the war in Ukraine, many citizens (civilian and military) with amputated limbs will need durable, high-functioning prostheses, adaptation to wearing them, and physical rehabilitation.

Professor Hubert Egger specializes in researching bionic prostheses of hands, arms, and legs for amputees, which are more advanced and can provide greater mobility. His achievements in this field attracted worldwide attention when, in 2007, he presented a mind-controlled prosthetic arm. In 2009, a smart prosthetic hand was proposed, and a smart leg prosthesis was later proposed.

The guests had the opportunity to inspect the simulation training center and physical infrastructure for the students of the “Prosthetics-Orthotics” specialty, as well as the production facilities of one of the prosthetics centers in Ternopil, a TNMU partner.
