TNMU Continues the Implementation of the Dental Prosthetics and Treatment Project for Military Personnel

From April to the end of December 2024, a pilot project for free dental prosthetics for military personnel was implemented at the dental department of Ternopil National Medical University. Since August 2024, TNMU received an additional package from the National Health Service of Ukraine (NHSU) for military personnel’s therapeutic and surgical dental treatment.

Over 100 Ukrainian defenders received dental prosthetics services, and over 100 servicemen received dental treatment.

“Unfortunately, many servicemen have little time for comprehensive dental treatment or prosthetics. Their leaves are short, and they must quickly return to service. Therefore, we strive to examine patients thoroughly on the first day, including free X-rays, and develop a treatment plan. During the remaining days of their leave, we aim to implement the treatment plan to the extent possible fully. Prosthetics, however, require more time – from one week to several weeks. Starting January 2025, this project will become permanent. During discussions with representatives of the National Health Service of Ukraine, we raised the issue of increasing funding for dental prosthetics due to insufficient resources. The NHSU increased the funding,” said the head of the dental department, Associate Professor Volodymyr Machohan.

The TNMU dental team includes:

  • A therapeutic dentist (specializing in tooth restoration, reconstruction, and root canal treatment),
  • A surgical dentist (providing simple and complex tooth extractions),
  • A dental radiologist and
  • Two prosthodontists (specializing in dental prosthetics).

At TNMU, free dental prosthetic services are available to:

  • Combatants,
  • Individuals with disabilities resulting from war,
  • Active military personnel.

To receive services, the following documents must be provided (with copies and originals for verification):

  • Ukrainian passport,
  • Taxpayer identification card,
  • Certificate (combatant certificate, disability certificate due to war, war participant certificate, and/or military ID for privates, sergeants, and petty officers).

Military personnel not on leave can also receive a referral from their unit commander for dental treatment or prosthetics.
