Participation of TNMU Scientists in the European Congress of Rheumatology

From June 11 to 14, 2025, the European Congress of Rheumatology — EULAR 2025 — was held in Barcelona, Spain. The congress was attended by Professor Svitlana Smyian, Head of the Department of Internal Medicine No. 2, Associate Professor Sofiia Husak, and rheumatologists from the Rheumatology Department of Ternopil Regional Clinical Hospital — Head of the Department Oleksandra Makhovska and Zhanna Antyuk — as part of the Ukrainian delegation of the Association of Rheumatologists of Ukraine.

Since 1947, the European Congress of Rheumatology has gathered leading experts in the field. Every year, the event is attended by approximately 14,000–15,000 delegates from over 100 countries.

The scientific program of EULAR 2025 is distinguished by a high level of professional organization, an interdisciplinary approach, and a focus on clinically significant aspects of rheumatology. The program includes more than 180 scientific sessions, symposia, workshops, and poster presentations, covering both basic research and clinical practice.

Key thematic areas included:

Patient-centered care: involving patients in clinical decision-making, assessing quality of life, and functional status.

Immune-mediated rheumatic diseases: new mechanisms of pathogenesis and biomarkers for early diagnosis.

Personalized therapy: use of biological and targeted agents, new treatment algorithms for patients with rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, psoriatic arthritis, systemic vasculitis, and other conditions.

Innovative technologies in rheumatology: application of artificial intelligence, telemedicine, advanced diagnostic techniques, and digital tools for patient monitoring.

Rheumatology and education: educational approaches for multidisciplinary teams, the use of AI in teaching and research, and training future specialists in the field of rheumatology.

Pediatric rheumatology: new standards for managing adolescent patients.

The TNMU delegation had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the latest EULAR 2025 recommendations on managing patients with systemic connective tissue and autoimmune diseases; establish professional contacts with European colleagues for future collaboration in clinical research and educational initiatives; and gather ideas to improve the rheumatology curriculum within internal medicine based on the latest approaches.

As a result of the visit, it is planned to integrate current EULAR 2025 clinical guidelines into academic disciplines using real-world case studies presented at EULAR in practical rheumatology sessions, to organize a seminar series for medical interns titled “New Horizons in Rheumatology: EULAR 2025 Insights”, and to disseminate the acquired materials among university educators, clinical department staff, and practicing physicians to enhance the quality of medical education and patient care.

Participation in the EULAR 2025 European Congress of Rheumatology has been a powerful source of up-to-date evidence-based knowledge, professional inspiration, and transformative ideas for medical education. The insights gained will contribute to the improvement of teaching quality, the development of clinical reasoning among students, and the promotion of a patient-centered approach.
