TNMU is the Leader Among Medical Universities in the Number of Active Erasmus+ KA2 Projects
I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University confirms its status as a key player on the international educational scene, simultaneously implementing six major Erasmus+ KA2 (Capacity Building in the Field of Higher Education) projects. With this number of active initiatives, TNMU is the leader among medical universities in Ukraine, actively integrating European standards and technologies into healthcare and education.
These projects, carried out in cooperation with leading universities and institutions of the EU and the Eastern Partnership, cover strategic areas: from strengthening national resilience and digital transformation to reforming research activities and developing intercultural competence.
The LIFESTRAND project (“Training and Dissemination of Skills in Providing Emergency Care”) directly responds to the challenges of military aggression. It aims to build the capacity of nine universities in Ukraine and Georgia in training first-aid skills for staff, students, and residents living in frontline areas. The ultimate goal is to train at least 7,200 citizens and university representatives, providing them with knowledge of life-support skills and pre-medical care.
The Open4UA project (“Open Science for the Ukrainian Higher Education System”) is strategically aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s knowledge-based economy as part of post-war recovery. Its main objective is to reform the higher education system through prioritizing Open Science. The initiative includes support for changes in national legislation, reform of research evaluation, and the development of tools for implementing open practices at the institutional level.
Digi-CHange is an innovative initiative that reforms education in healthcare and nursing through the use of advanced digital technologies and the implementation of a multidisciplinary team-based approach. The project actively involves industry representatives, ensuring that higher education aligns with real labor market needs and contributes to sustainable growth.
The goal of MultiCultiMed is to improve healthcare through enhancing cultural awareness and intercultural competence among medical and nursing students. This contributes to better patient care for people of diverse cultural backgrounds and helps reduce discrimination. As part of the project, an openly accessible multicultural education platform will be created, serving as a tool to improve education quality across Europe.
Two new projects — ARIVE and VITAL, each with a budget of €500,000 (2025–2028) — use virtual exchange tools to modernize research and teaching activities.
ARIVE (“Advancing Research and Innovation in Higher Education through Virtual Exchanges”) creates an innovative environment for international scientific cooperation. Key components include:
- immersive Virtual Research Semesters (VRS);
- digital mentoring programs;
- AI-based learning modules.
VITAL (“Virtual Innovation and Training for Academic Leadership Enhancement, Digital Competences, and Research Excellence”) targets the support of young faculty members in Georgia and Ukraine. The project addresses structural gaps in academic leadership, digital pedagogy, and research development by introducing a sustainable professional development system based on European values of inclusiveness and academic integrity.
Participation in six major Erasmus+ KA2 projects demonstrates TNMU’s confident progress in improving education quality, promoting innovation, and adhering to the European development path even in wartime conditions, making it a true driving force of educational change in Ukraine.
