Nursing Education and Research Institute Continues Cooperation with WHO Ukraine

On February 23–27, 2026, the Educational and Research Institute of Nursing at TNMU hosted the first training course in a series of PEN protocols training courses planned for 2026 for nurses. The course was implemented within the framework of strategic cooperation with the WHO Country Office in Ukraine and aimed to strengthen primary health care capacity for the prevention, early detection, and management of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) in accordance with international standards.

The training brought together nurses from primary health care institutions across the Ternopil region. Participants deepened their knowledge of the prevention, early detection, and management of noncommunicable diseases in line with the PEN (Package of Essential Noncommunicable Disease Interventions) approach for primary care.

Particular attention was paid to cardiovascular risk assessment algorithms, blood pressure control, management of patients with diabetes, and lifestyle counseling.

The course program combined theoretical modules with practical sessions, including clinical case discussions and training in teamwork skills. The training was conducted by certified trainers who completed specialized training with support from the World Health Organization and have experience implementing PEN protocols.

The development of nurses’ competencies is a key element in strengthening the public health system, especially amid the growing prevalence of noncommunicable diseases.

Within the framework of agreements with WHO Ukraine, a series of regional trainings, mentoring visits, and online support sessions for course graduates is planned for 2026. The implementation of this initiative is expected to improve the quality of primary health care services and strengthen the role of nurses in implementing evidence-based practices.

The Educational and Research Institute of Nursing will continue to expand international cooperation and introduce innovative educational formats to support the professional development of the nursing community in Ukraine.
