Latin Language Olympiad at TNMU
On March 12, 2026, the Department of Foreign Languages of I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University organized the first stage of the All-Ukrainian Student Olympiad in the academic discipline “Latin Language and Medical Terminology.” A total of 33 first-year students from the medical and dental faculties, as well as 11 international students, participated in the Latin language Olympiad.

The Olympiad was prepared and conducted by Professor Nadiia Fedchyshyn and Associate Professors Halyna Palasiuk, Tetiana Savaryn, and Ivanna Vorona, who developed tasks classified by difficulty level. An innovation of this year’s Olympiad was the inclusion of competitive tasks comprising closed-type test questions, open-ended tasks, and creative assignments that demonstrate knowledge of linguoculturology. The tasks were based on the understanding of the importance of developing terminological competence in future doctors and the crucial role of Latin as an international language of science.
International students completed the Olympiad tasks remotely using the Teams platform. Associate Professors Roman Kotsiuba, Mariia Kichula, and Ivanna Humenna prepared tasks of varying difficulty, covering reading, listening, and writing.
A jury was selected to evaluate the works, consisting of: Professor Nadiia Fedchyshyn (Chair), Associate Professors Halyna Palasiuk, Tetiana Savaryn, Ivanna Vorona, Roman Kotsiuba, Ivanna Humenna, and Mariia Kichula.
The results of the Olympiad demonstrated an appropriate professional level of students’ Latin training, a high degree of development of practical skills, and strong creative potential among future specialists in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and physical therapy.
