Ternopil National Medical University Welcomed Jakob Kepka, Founder of the “HopeRaising Expedition” Charity Project

On September 1, 2026, Ternopil National Medical University named after I. Horbachevsky welcomed Jakob Kepka, founder of the “HopeRaising Expedition” charity project. This was the veteran’s second visit to the medical university, as he first visited TNMU two years ago. This time, Jakob came together with his team, Daniil Dziabenko and Vasyl Yazdovytskyi.

The main topic of the meeting was the development of the Prosthetics and Orthotics specialty at TNMU and the overall state of the field in Ukraine. The discussion was attended by TNMU Rector Petro Lykhatskyi; Deputy Rector for International Affairs Mykhailo Korda; Head of the Project Management Office Oksana Shevchuk; Tetiana Bakaliuk, guarantor of the Educational and Professional Programme “Prosthetics and Orthotics”; and master’s students pursuing professional qualifications as prosthetists and orthotists.

The participants discussed modern approaches to training specialists, the implementation of advanced international experience, and practical challenges faced by patients and healthcare professionals during rehabilitation.

Jakob Kepka is a former U.S. Marine who, after undergoing limb amputation, managed to return to an active lifestyle and has dedicated his work to supporting Ukrainians affected by the war.

The “HopeRaising Expedition” project, founded by Jakob Kepka, is a unique initiative. Its main goal is to draw public and international attention to the rehabilitation and social needs of people with amputations, as well as to encourage people around the world to support and participate in similar initiatives, regardless of their own physical abilities.
