TNMU Professor Takes Part in the 47th Annual Meeting of the European Thyroid Association in Portugal
From 5 to 8 September 2026, the city of Porto, Portugal, hosted a major scientific event – the 47th Annual Meeting of the European Thyroid Association (ETA 2026). The conference brought together researchers and practising physicians from Europe, Asia, Africa, North and South America. The scientific programme featured 27 thematic sessions.

This year, Ukraine was represented by researchers from Kyiv, Ternopil, and Vinnytsia. Professor Oleksandr Shidlovskyi of the Department of General Surgery represented I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University.

Throughout the conference, participants discussed various aspects of thyroid disease diagnosis. Particular attention was paid to the diagnosis of thyroid cancer, including efforts to predict the malignant course of the disease. Presentations focused on an in-depth study of the tumour’s genetic profile and its potential role in determining whether organ-preserving surgery or active surveillance may be appropriate.

A separate session was devoted to the management of hypothyroidism, including changes in acceptable reference ranges and the titration of thyroid hormone replacement therapy.
Another session focused on factors contributing to radioiodine-refractory metastatic thyroid cancer.
For the first time, considerable attention was devoted to the potential and feasibility of using artificial intelligence to assess thyroid ultrasound images, as well as cytological and histological specimens in thyroid nodular disease.
The European Thyroid Association (ETA) is a global community of specialists whose research and professional activities are aimed at improving the quality of life of patients with thyroid disorders.
Participation in events of this level opens up new opportunities for international cooperation, professional exchange, and the integration of advanced global approaches into medical practice in Ukraine.
