An Exhibition of Volodymyr Sherstii’s Icons, “Angels of Unbreakable Ukraine”, Opens at TNMU Library
On 22 October 2026, the exhibition hall of the library of I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University hosted the opening of a solo exhibition of icons entitled “Angels of Unbreakable Ukraine” by Volodymyr Sherstii, a Distinguished Master of Folk Art of Ukraine. The event brought together representatives of the clergy, TNMU faculty members and students, artists, and admirers of sacred art from Ternopil.

Volodymyr Sherstii is a renowned Ukrainian icon painter, volunteer, and former volunteer fighter with the Carpathian Sich Battalion. His works are held in churches, museums, and private collections in Ukraine, Italy, the Vatican, and Argentina.

The exhibition features more than 40 icons created by the artist in the Byzantine style, combining the traditions of ancient icon painting with profound spiritual meaning. The images on display are more than a collection of works of art; they are a true “window into eternity”. They are filled with light that shines through the colours, offering support and comfort and bringing people closer to God.

In his works, Mr Sherstii deeply reflects on the tragic events of the ongoing war, creating images of angels — heavenly guardians who serve as a spiritual shield for Ukrainian soldiers and the entire nation. A special place in the exhibition is occupied by icons painted on wooden boards taken from ammunition crates. These works symbolise the artist’s aspiration to transform instruments of death into prayers for peace.

The artist generously shares his experience. For several years, he has been the founder and mentor of the Volodymyr Sherstii Icon Painting Studio, where he teaches a new generation of artists who will carry on the traditions of Ukrainian sacred art. Tamara Vorontsova, Associate Professor at the Department of Paediatrics and Paediatric Surgery at TNMU, shared her experience of studying at Mr Sherstii’s icon painting school with those attending the event. Mr Sherstii also announced his intention to open a branch of the school at the university library.

Visitors to the library had a unique opportunity not only to admire the artist’s works but also to meet Mr Sherstii in person, learn about the hidden symbols in his icons, and hear fascinating stories behind the creation of these images. The exhibition “Angels of Unbreakable Ukraine” became a powerful source of inspiration and faith in Ukraine’s Victory for everyone present, reminding them of the indomitable spirit of the Ukrainian people through art born of faith, love, and hope.
The exhibition is open to visitors from 22 October to 11 November.
Everyone is warmly invited to visit the exhibition and discover their own “window into eternity” — to encounter the sacred through art born of faith, love, and hope.
