Christmas at TNMU, Ukrainian Traditions

Every time at the Christ Conception holidays, our hearts are filled with great joy, a premonition of something confusing, exciting, mysterious. This holiday is one of the most important in the year, which is celebrated by all Christian communities. On this day, the Son of God, Jesus Christ, was born in Bethlehem.

Christmas is a holiday that is traditionally celebrated with the family. The period of preparation for Christmas is a time blessed by God to forget old insults, to thank those who have done us good or just been with us during the year.

Christmas in Ukraine is an intertwining of church and folk traditions that are no longer perceived separately. Carolling, shchedruvannia, family dinner on Christmas Eve and many other traditions are being passed from generation to generation, from parents to children.

On the Christmas eve, the staff of the TNMU Library invited students of the International Students Faculty to celebrate “Christmas: Ukrainian traditions of celebration”. It was organized by the staff of the Information and Bibliographic Department of the Library. The hosts of the event Valeria Hryskiv and Liubov Lushchynska told the guests about the traditions of celebrating Christmas in Ukraine, the main symbols of these holiday, Christmas dishes, carols and shchedrivkas.

The international students John Isaac Cornelius, Vikas Kumar, Harsh Bhavnanya (India), Jessica Orakpo (Nigeria) and Jerry Alimonai (Ghana) also shared their traditions of celebrating New Year and Christmas in their countries.

At the end of the event, everyone could take part in a master class on making Ukrainian dumplings and taste Christmas dishes.

Petro Selskyi, the Dean of the International Students Faculty, expressed thanks to the organizers and participants for an interesting event, congratulated them on the upcoming holidays and wished success and inspiration in the New Year.
