New generation of medical students started training at TNMU

The meeting of the Academic Council of I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University, dedicated to the matriculation of the first year students, was held on August 30, 2019 in the inner courtyard of the administrative building of the University.

1,300 new students who made vows to devote their lives to a noble cause have entered TNMU this year. They solemnly promised to fight for human health, to preserve and enhance the best traditions of higher education, to be worthy of the honorary title of a medical student. From this moment, each student began counting down the days, months, years to fulfill the dream of becoming a qualified doctor, dentist, pharmacist, nurse, paramedic, physical therapist, succeeding in a professional field and becoming a multifaceted personality.

The solemn ceremony of matriculation was started with a common prayer and blessing by the Bishops.

“Today, for the first time, you are wearing white lab coats that are very symbolic. You should remember that a doctor should not only have skillful hands and professionalism, but cleanliness and sincerity when working with a patient. Very often, a patient needs the support and understanding of the physicians. May the Most Merciful Lord bless you at every moment of your studying here” with these words the Archbishop of Ternopil and Kremenets Nestor blessed the first year students.

The Bishop-Assistant of the Ternopil-Zboriv Archdiocese of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church Theodor congratulated all the students saying that the path they have chosen leads to human growth. He emphasized that the profession of a health care worker is respected and noble, because it comes from God himself, because he has put into the heart the desire to serve each other and to the one who most needs human help. He wished the newcomers professional growth with love, hope, joy, inspiration.

Rector of Ternopil National Medical University, Professor M. M. Korda greeted the students with such words of welcome: “On behalf of the University students and staff, I sincerely congratulate you on the beginning of an important stage of your lives. Today you are joining a large and friendly family of students of Ternopil National Medical University. This year, 1300 young people have joined the University. By this number our University ranks second in Ukraine among medical colleges.

Dear freshmen, deep knowledge is needed to help people with various illnesses. You will acquire them at our university. For this purpose all conditions have been created here. The University has a profoundly competent teaching staff. You will be taught by more than 100 professors, over 400 associate professors. They have extensive clinical and practical experience. Every day they will share their knowledge and skills with you. In a few days, you will begin training in great classrooms and laboratories. A library of nearly half a million books is waiting for you. You will also be studying in the newest computer classes and simulation training center. The teaching methods introduced at our university are as adapted as possible to the global educational space and are based on modern computer technologies. With the help of modern mobile devices you can easily access the electronic resources of the University, where you have everything you need to study, from the schedule of classes to the preparation materials for them.

We do our best to ensure that your time at university is not only a time of intensive study, but also that you have an entertaining and interesting student life. We have student scientific associations where you can improve in different specialization and master your research skills. International Student Summer School are taking place at our education-recreation center “Chervona Kalyna”. The best students from our and many foreign universities participate in this event. Foreign teachers hold workshops and lectures, and the School program is full of instructive and entertaining activities. You will have the opportunity to participate in sports clubs, cultural events, volunteer activities.

This year, we introduced the Mentoring Institute at the University. The undergraduate students will become reliable mentors and friends for you. They will help you to get the most out of your training. You can also ask for advice from your tutors.

Today, students from 19 foreign countries who choose our university to study are becoming students. In total, we have nearly 2,000 international students from 59 countries. I advise you to make close acquaintances. This will help international students to better socialize and adapt to our country and will help you to learn a foreign language and broaden your horizons.

Remember that you have chosen the most humane and essential profession in the world. Never stop, constantly evolve and improve, be persistent in learning and you will succeed! We look forward to your success. I am sure that you will multiply the glory of the University. May you be happy and may God grant you a good fortune and a broad path in life, ” Prof. Mykhaylo Korda said in his speech.

Mayor of Ternopil Serhii Nadal wished the freshmen good luck in their education and professional development.

Volodymyr Bohaichuk, the head of the Health Care Department of the Regional State Administration, congratulated the freshmen, teachers and their parents on the holiday. He wished them success, great achievements in training and professional development.

At TNMU, the traditions are cherished and maintained. Professor Ivan Smiian, the Rector of Ternopil Medical University in 1981-1997, greeted the freshmen on this solemn day. He noted that only 450 new students could be admitted to the University during his administration, and now 1,300 young people have joined the medical student community.

The student’s record cards were presented to students who received the highest marks of external independent testing or showed the best results at the entrance examinations, by Rector of University, Professor Mykhaylo Korda.

Associate Professor Hryhorii Zahrychuk read the oath of the student.

The event’s was highlighted by the TNMU choir, which performed the official and spiritual hymns of Ukraine, the anthem of the University, the prayer “Our Father” and “Gaudeamus”.
