Professors of TSMU Department of Children’s Diseases and Pediatric Surgery consulted in regional hospitals

Faculty of the Department of Children’s Diseases and Pediatric Surgery continue to visit remote areas of Ternopil region with to give seminars and consult doctors and patients. Logistical support for these visits is provided by Ternopil State Medical University administration.

Over the last few months they had made trips to Kozova, Berezhany, Zalischyky, Zborivy, Monastyrska and Kremenets districts, during which they consulted patients. Children and their parents were able to receive expert advice from pediatricians, immunologists, infectious diseases specialists, as well as a cardiologist, gastroenterologist, and neurologist.

More than 100 children with different pathologies were examined. All children were prescribed appropriate treatment and their parents given recommendations.

The parents received advice related to the treatment of diagnosed diseases. 18 children were referred to the regional children’s hospital for further consultation.

Furthermore, on March 16, 2017 TSMU doctors had a scheduled visit to the school for deaf children in Terebovlya for medical examination of children. A team of doctors, including  otolaryngologist YM Andreichyn, pedicatric orthopedic traumatologist MD Protsailo, pediatrician VO Synytska, and pediatric urologist OO Stoian examined 130 children enrolled in the school and aged 3 to 17 years.

The school enrolls children are from all over Ternopil region with varying degrees of hearing loss and speech disorders. Among the students are also children with developmental disabilities, Down syndrome or cerebral palsy. Therefore the students are assigned personalized study plans. Thus, classes for deaf children usually have no more than 8 pupils, and some classes have 3 to 5 pupils.

Many were diagnosed with connective tissue dysplasia syndrome, which is characterized by hypermobility of the joints, hyperelastic skin, malocclusion, scoliosis, deformity of the chest, small abnormalities of the heart, and biliary tract dysfunction.

During the visits to district hospitals and as a part of the project to improve diagnosis of primary immunodeficiency in children of Ternopil region supported by a grant from Jeffrey Modell Foundation, TSMU professors gave topical lectures and seminars for pediatricians, general practitioners and family doctors medicine. Prof. OR Boyarchuck, and  Assoc. Prof. LA Volianska spoke about problems of early diagnosis of primary immunodeficiencies in children; Prof. Boyarchuk OR gave presentation on immunodeficiency with antibody defects for general practitioners, and  Assoc. Prof. MI Kinash on DNA repair-deficiency disorders in medical practice of primary care physicians. The issue of primary immunodeficiencies elicited a lot of interest among the medical professionals and resulted in discussions.

At the request of doctors in Berezhany district Assoc. Prof. NY Scherbatyuk gave lecture on current approaches to diagnosis and treatment of iron deficiency anemia in children, while in Monastyryska district Assoc. Prof. LA Volianska gave a talk on evidence-based approaches in treatment of respiratory infections in children.

 In total 168 primary care physicians attended the lectures, including 139 general practitioners.
