Research and Training Conference “Medical and Social Problems of Childhood” Took Place in TNMU

On October 21-22, 2021, the National Research and Training Conference “Medical and Social Problems of Childhood” took place in I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University.

The conference was organized by the staff of the Department of Department of Children’s Diseases and Pediatric Surgery of TNMU. During the event there were two plenary sessions: “Diagnosis of congenital errors of immunity” and “Aspects of multidisciplinary care of children with spina bifida”, as well as three sectional sessions. Due to quarantine restrictions, the meeting of scientists was held online.

The conference brought together many scientists: pediatricians, general practitioners, immunologists, neurologists, physicians of other, as well as interns. A total of more than 300 participants from different parts of Ukraine and the world joined it.

Professor Ivan Klishch, the Vice-Rector for Research, welcomed the participants of the conference on behalf of Professor Mykhailo Korda, the Rector of TNMU.

Ivan Mykolaiovych drew attention to the urgency of the theme of the conference, its importance in the Covid-19 pandemic and the role of the pediatrician in medical care delivery to the population of our region.

Opening the first meeting, Professor Oksana Boyarchuk, the Head of the Department of Children’s Diseases and Pediatric Surgery of I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University, made a report on the success and challenges of diagnosing primary immunodeficiencies. She focused on the main achievements of the Department of Children’s Diseases and Pediatric Surgery and Pediatric Immunology Services in the diagnosis of congenital malformations, international cooperation and spoke about the pilot project on neonatal screening of severe combined immunodeficiency, difficulties and ways to overcome them.

Halyna Makukh, the Head of the Laboratory of Genetic Research of the Institute of Hereditary Pathology of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, presented a report on “Neonatal screening of lymphopenia in screening programs for new-borns with a genetic disorder”. Halyna Vasylivna emphasized that the pilot projects are the basis for further implementation of mass neonatal screening.

Svitlana Sharapova, Senior Research Fellow of the Republican Research and Practice Centre for Pediatric Oncology, Hematology and Immunology (Minsk, Republic of Belarus), interested the audience with the report on “Prevalence of severe combined immunodeficiencies in Eastern Europe”.

Anastasia Bondarenko, Professor of the Department of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Pediatric Immunology of the Shupyk National University of Health, introduced a rare disease – hereditary angioneurotic oedema, its diagnosis and treatment to the conference participants.

Tetiana Hariian, Associate Professor of the Department of Children’s Diseases and Pediatric Surgery, I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University, presented a report on “Lymphopenia and microcephaly: an algorithm for diagnostic search”.

Natalia Yarema, Associate Professor of the Department of Children’s Diseases and Pediatric Surgery, TNMU, reported on “Cytopenia in the neonatal period: is it always immunodeficiency?”.

The report “COVID-19 in patients with primary immunodeficiencies: our experience” was presented by Liubov Volianska, Associate Professor of the Department of Children’s Diseases and Pediatric Surgery of TNMU and Viktor Mishchanchuk, the 2nd-year intern.

Professor Alla Volokha, the Head of the Department of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Immunology of the Shupyk National University of Healthcare of Ukraine, covered the problem of multisystem inflammatory syndrome associated with COVID-19 in Ukraine in her report.

Tetiana Tkachova, Associate Professor of the P. Shupyk National University of Healthcare of Ukraine, presented a report on “Approaches to the diagnosis of interstitial lung diseases in children”.

Olha Fedortsiv, Professor of the Department of Children’s Diseases and Pediatric Surgery of I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University, expanded on pertussis in children and its consequences.

The report by Oleksandra Shulhai, Associate Professor of the Department of Children’s Diseases and Pediatric Surgery of TNMU on “Clinical and epidemiological features of bronchial asthma in older children with underlying vitamin D status” was really interesting.

Svitlana Nykytiuk, Associate Professor of the Department of Children’s Diseases and Pediatric Surgery of TNMU, spoke about the clinical aspects of Lyme disease in children.

Ihor Horishnii, Associate Professor of the Department of Children’s Diseases and Pediatric Surgery of TNMU, drew the attention of participants of the scientific forum to “Pediatric aspects of functional dyspepsia from the standpoint of the Roman Criteria IV”.

In the report by Tamara Vorontsova, Associate Professor of the Department of Children’s Diseases and Pediatric Surgery, the dietary fibres and its importance in the practice of gastroenterologists and endocrinologists were presented.

On Friday, October 22, the conference continued with an ample scientific program. Professor Viktor Lukashuk, the Head of the Department of Pediatrics No. 5 of Bogomolets National Medical University, congratulated the conference organizers and thanked all the speakers for interesting and topical speeches. He presented a report on “Diagnosis and treatment of chronic gastritis induced by H. Pylori in children: questions and answers”.

The report by Oleksandra Shulhai, the Associate Professor of the Department of Children’s Diseases and Pediatric Surgery of TNMU on “Breast-feeding young children: what’s new?” was really interesting to the participants of the conference.

Maria Kinash, Associate Professor of the Department of Children’s Diseases and Pediatric Surgery of TNMU, presented a report on “Zinc: benefits, sources of income and supply for children in Ternopil region”.

Iryna Lukashuk, the Department of Pediatric Endocrine Pathology of the V. Komisarenko Institute of Endocrinology and Metabolism of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine reported on improving the diagnosis and optimization of treatment of comorbid celiac disease in children with type 1 diabetes.

Lesia Dobrovolska, Associate Professor of the Department of Children’s Diseases and Pediatric Surgery of TNMU, made an interesting report on the prevalence of selective immunoglobulin A deficiency in children with type I diabetes mellitus.

Mykhailo Lovha, the Head of the Neurosurgical Department of Volyn Regional Territorial Medical Association for the Protection of Motherhood and Childhood of Volyn Regional Council, expanded on “Surgical correction of spina bifida and hydrocephalus”.

During the scientific meeting Professor Oksana Boyarchuk, presented a report on “Multidisciplinary approach in the management of children with spina bifida” to the conference participants.

Yaryna Romanyshyn, immunologist at the Western Ukrainian Specialized Children’s Medical Centre, reported on the importance and necessity of vaccination and recommendations for patients with diseases of the nervous system.

Halyna Bogutska, a rehabilitation specialist at the Health Sciences Center Hospital and a lecturer at the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada, presented an interesting report on “Some Aspects of Physical Therapy in Spinal Cord Injuries”.

Professor Volodymyr Verteletskyi, a foreign corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Academy of Medicine of Argentina, a member of the US Academy of Pediatrics, a member of the US College of Medical Genetics, a member of the US Association of Scientific Pediatrics, an emeritus chief of the Department of Medical Genetics and Professor of Pediatrics, University of South Alabama (USA), Honorary Professor of Lviv National Medical University and National University “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy”, Director of Programs and Chairman of the Board of the International Charitable Foundation “OMNI-Network for Children” reported on “Status of the spina bifida prevention bill in Ukraine”, in which Professor presented aspects of prevention of congenital malformations.

At the end of the National Research and Training Conference “Medical and social problems of children” Professor Oksana Boyarchuk summed up the work of plenary and sectional meetings, thanked the university management, all speakers and participants of the scientific forum for active participation in its work.

The format of the videoconference allowed the participants not only to present their scientific achievements, but also at the same time was a platform for scientific discussion, joint watching and fruitful discussion of videos and presentations.
