Students of Ternopil Secondary School No. 16 Got Acquainted with the Teaching Process at TNMU

On March 18, 2024, senior students of Ternopil Secondary School No. 16 and Deputy Director for Education Maria Baliashchuk visited TNMU.

According to the visit program, the students were accompanied by the teachers of the Faculties of Dentistry and Pharmacy and the Institute of Medical and Biological Problems.

Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry Svitlana Boitsaniuk met the guests, told them about the history of the establishment of the faculty and its founder – DSc, Professor S. Cherkashyn, about the structure of one of the five main structural units and briefly described the departments that represent it (Department of Dental Surgery, Department of Dental Therapy, Department of Paediatric Dentistry, Department of Orthopaedic Dentistry). She emphasized the powerful personnel potential of teachers, which significantly affects the results of the educational process and contributes to the scientific interest of students.

Interesting and emotional stories of Svitlana Boitsaniuk certainly impressed the schoolchildren. They were delighted to look at the educational equipment of two phantom classrooms, where students improve their manual skills, examined the clinical halls where third-year students work, and even tried themselves in the role of a dentist and a student of the Faculty.

The students were told about the specifics of the organization of the educational process (in particular, the implementation of a single day system for senior students), learned about leisure activities (choir, gym, theatre studio “Art-drama”) and in the field of volunteering. They were also informed about the work of the library in terms of providing educational publications, creating conditions for individual work in the reading hall, in the direction of cultural and aesthetic development of youth.

The teachers of the Faculty continued, supplemented and specified the information provided by Svitlana Boitsaniuk.

For example, Natalia Tverdokhlib, Associate Professor of the Department of Dental Surgery, spoke about the peculiarities of the profession of a dentist, about the professional training of a future specialist and material and technical support of the training process.

Associate Professor Lesia Kuchyrka spoke about the disciplines taught at the Department of Paediatric Dentistry, the range of services provided for children, the need for regular professional examinations, and the specifics of patient management depending on the clinical case.

The teachers of the Institute of Medical and Biological Problems continued the excursion. Thus, Associate Professor Yaroslav Stravskyi spoke about the work of the Department of Medical Biology, conducted a tour around the museum, and showed the educational facilities.

Associate Professor Lidia Romanchuk spoke about the Department of Microbiology, Virology and Immunology, demonstrated preparations for working with a microscope, involved schoolchildren in conducting an experiment on the detection of skin microflora using the method of fingerprints on a nutrient medium.

Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy Ihor Berdei organized and conducted a tour of the educational and laboratory premises, talked about the peculiarities of training future specialists in the field of pharmacy.

Associate Professors Mariana Demchuk, Olena Pokotylo, Lilia Bidniak and Assistant Professor Anastasia Dub (Department of Pharmacy Management, Economics and Technology) worked as a team. Schoolchildren visited the commodity science class, got acquainted with modern samples of medical equipment. They also visited the educational pharmacy, learned about the peculiarities of the work of a pharmacist’s assistant and a pharmacist and their role in the process of pharmacopoeia for visitors-patients, the peculiarities of transportation, storage and dispensing of medicines.

Associate Professor of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry Iryna Ivanusa invited the guests to a practical session where the quantitative determination of AFI (active pharmaceutical ingredient) in medicinal preparations was carried out. Associate Professor Liubomyr Kryskiv spoke about the department’s work.

Head of the Department of General Chemistry, Hryhorii Zahrychuk, spoke about the current state of chemical science and its role in the creation of new drugs, the importance of discipline for students of various specialties, demonstrated the possibilities of using modern multimedia equipment for better learning of educational material.

Professor Svitlana Marchyshyn, Head of the Department of Pharmacognosy and Medical Botany, shared many years of practical experience gained as a result of studying the healing properties of medicinal plants of Ukraine. She prepared for schoolchildren a small excursion into the history of pharmacognosy and pointed out the important role of herbal preparations in the complex treatment of ailments. Pupils examined interesting samples of herbarium material, and were also involved in the study of a micropreparation of a carrot root with the help of a microscope.

Mentors Anna Lybavka (SS-314), Liubov Redko (SS-207) and Daria Tretiak (MM-586) helped, supported with friendly advice and provided interesting information about the university.
